# Online tutoring jobs in Pakistan: what each platform pays in rupees

Online tutoring is the one remote job that does not need a portfolio, a degree in computer science or a client pipeline. It needs decent English, a stable connection and a webcam. The pay, in rupees, beats most entry-level office work in Pakistan.

This guide gives the rates the platforms publish themselves, what they deduct, how the money reaches a Pakistani bank account, and where the tax sits. Rates are as published on 20 September 2026, converted at Rs 277.25 to the dollar.

## What the platforms actually pay

### Cambly: a fixed rate, published openly

Cambly is the simplest to understand because it does not let you set a price. It pays per minute of conversation.

Payment is weekly, by direct deposit. No teaching certificate is required. You are paid for minutes spent chatting, so gaps between students are unpaid, which is the number nobody mentions: a four-hour session with three hours of actual calls pays for three hours.

At Rs 2,828 an hour, 20 paid hours a week is about **Rs 226,000 a month**. Twelve paid hours a week is about **Rs 136,000**. Those are the honest brackets for someone doing this part-time around another job.

### Preply: you set the rate, they take a cut

Preply lets you name your hourly price, then takes commission:

- **Trial lesson with a new student: 100 percent commission.** You are paid nothing for it.
- **Every lesson after that: starts at 33 percent, falls to 18 percent** as your taught hours build.

Preply says its most popular tutors earn up to **$550 a week**, which is about **Rs 152,500 a week**. That is the top of the distribution, not the middle.

The 100 percent trial commission is the part that catches new tutors. If a student takes a trial and never books again, you taught for free. The whole economics of Preply is conversion: how many trials turn into regulars.

### italki and the local platforms

On italki, tutors set their own hourly rate and the platform deducts a service fee from each completed lesson. italki does not publish a single headline pay figure because there is no fixed rate, so treat any specific number you see quoted elsewhere as unverified.

Local platforms such as Dot and Line, Maqsad and Sabaq hire Pakistan-based teachers directly and pay in rupees. Their rates are negotiated per role and are not published, so apply through their own careers pages rather than trusting a figure from a jobs aggregator.

## Step by step: getting started

1. **Test your connection first.** Run a speed test at the hour you plan to teach, not at 3am. Platforms expect stable video. Load shedding and a 4G backup plan matter more than your CV.
2. **Pick one platform, not five.** Commission on Preply falls with hours taught on Preply. Splitting hours across platforms keeps you permanently in the highest commission band on all of them.
3. **Record a profile video.** Every platform ranks on it. Two minutes, good light, no background noise, spoken not read.
4. **Set a low opening rate if you are on Preply or italki.** Preply says so itself: start lower to get your first students faster, then raise it. You cannot get reviews without students.
5. **Apply and wait.** Approval times vary by platform and by demand for your language. Do not pay anyone who offers to fast-track an application. No legitimate platform charges a tutor to join.
6. **Set up the payment route before your first payout**, not after. See below.

## Getting the money into Pakistan

This is where earnings leak. The platform pays in dollars; you need rupees in a Pakistani account.

- **Payoneer** is the most common route for Cambly and Preply payouts. You receive into a Payoneer balance and withdraw to a local bank account in rupees.
- **Wise** works for some platforms and not others, depending on what payout methods the platform supports.
- **Direct bank transfer** is offered by some platforms and is usually the slowest and least favourable on conversion.

The cost is not one fee, it is two: the withdrawal fee, and the exchange rate you are given versus the interbank rate. A route with a low stated fee and a poor rate can cost more than a route with a higher fee. ## The tax position

Tutoring income is income. It is taxable whether it arrives through Payoneer, Wise or a bank.

Two things follow from that:

- **Register with FBR and file a return.** Non-filers pay higher withholding on ordinary banking and vehicle transactions, which costs more over a year than the tax on a modest tutoring income.

If tutoring is your second income, the tax is calculated on the combined total, not on the tutoring alone. That surprises people in the first year.

## Five mistakes that cost money

1. **Counting unpaid gaps as work.** On per-minute platforms you are paid for calls, not for availability. Track paid minutes, not hours logged in.
2. **Giving unlimited free trials on Preply.** The trial commission is 100 percent. Cap how many you take a week.
3. **Ignoring the timezone your students are in.** Gulf and East Asian students are the friendliest hours from Pakistan. American evening slots are the middle of your night.
4. **Withdrawing small amounts often.** Fixed withdrawal fees eat small transfers. Batch them.
5. **Paying for a "guaranteed" tutoring job.** No platform on this list charges tutors to apply. Anyone asking for a registration fee is running a scam.

## Is it worth it?

At Cambly's published rate, a Pakistani tutor teaching 20 paid hours a week earns roughly Rs 226,000 a month before tax and transfer costs. That is competitive with a mid-level salaried job in Lahore or Karachi, for part-time hours, with no commute.

The catch is that it is not a salary. Hours depend on student demand, demand varies by season, and nothing is guaranteed. Treat the first three months as finding out what your realistic weekly hours are, and do not resign from anything on the strength of one good week.
