> How to see, download and pay a HESCO electricity bill online in under a minute, what the two numbers on the bill mean, and what to do when the amount looks wrong.

HESCO, the Hyderabad Electric Supply Company, is the government distribution company for Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Nawabshah, Badin, Thatta, Tando Allahyar and the rest of lower Sindh outside Karachi. Its bills are checked, downloaded and paid online through the same system every WAPDA-descended company uses, so once you have done it once you can do it for a relative anywhere in the country.

## What you need before you start

Any old HESCO bill, paper or a photo of one. Two numbers on it work:

- **Reference number**: 14 digits, printed at the top left of the bill. A single letter, **U** or **R**, is printed at the end of it; the online form asks for that letter separately.
- **Customer ID**: 10 digits, printed just above the reference number on newer bills.

The reference number is tied to the meter and never changes, so a bill from two years ago is as good as last month's. If you have no bill at all, the reference number is also on the meter installation card and on the sticker some meter readers leave; failing that, HESCO's helpline (118 from any phone) can read it back to you against the CNIC the connection is registered to.

## Check the bill online, step by step

1. Open https://bill.pitc.com.pk/hescobill in any browser.
2. Choose **Reference No** (or **Customer ID** if that is the number you have).
3. Type the 14 digits with no spaces. Pick **U** or **R** from the small box beside it to match the letter on your bill; the default is U.
4. Press the search button. The current month's bill opens as an image of the printed bill: units used, the tariff slabs applied, taxes and duties, the **due date**, the amount **payable within due date** and the higher amount **payable after due date**.
5. To keep a copy, use the print or download option on the page, or your browser's print to PDF. Banks and offices accept this duplicate bill as they would the paper one.

The page shows the latest bill only. Older bills are not kept on the public portal; for a history, ask at the sub-division office with the reference number, or use the company app, which keeps recent months.

## Reading the amount

Two figures matter. **Payable within due date** is what you pay on time. **Payable after due date** includes the late payment surcharge; pay that amount once the due date has passed, and expect the surcharge to appear on the next bill if you paid the lower figure late. Bills arrive roughly a month after the reading date, and the due date is usually about ten days after the bill is issued, so a bill you first see online may already be close to due.

If the units look wrong, compare the **present reading** printed on the bill with what the meter shows now. A reading far above the meter means an estimated or mistaken bill; that is a helpline or sub-division complaint, and the correction comes as a revised bill, not a refund.

## Paying it

Any bank app or internet banking that offers bill payment (the 1Link network), JazzCash and Easypaisa, bank branches, post offices and NADRA e-Sahulat outlets all take HESCO bills against the reference number. Online payments post to the account within a day or two; keep the transaction ID until the next bill shows the payment.

## Why the bill jumps

Residential tariff is slab-based, and a household that stays under 200 units for six consecutive months is billed as **protected** at much lower rates. Crossing 200 units once moves the whole bill to the unprotected slabs, and it takes six months under 200 to get back. Our [electricity bill calculator](/tools/utilities/electricity-bill-calculator) shows the slab-by-slab arithmetic for any number of units on the current NEPRA tariff, and the [HESCO page](/electricity/hesco) has the company's contacts and the other companies' portals.

## Complaints and the helpline

Dial **118** for power failures and billing complaints, or text **8118**. The Power Information Technology Company (PITC) runs the complaint system for all the distribution companies, so the same numbers work from any network. For a wrong reading, take the bill and a photo of the meter to the sub-division office named on the bill; for detection bills (theft or tampering allegations) you have a right to a hearing, and NEPRA's consumer complaint cell is the next step if the company does not resolve it.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I check the bill by SMS?** No. The distribution companies do not send bills by SMS; the online portal, the company app and the paper bill are the channels. Any site or number promising SMS bills is a third party.

**Is there a fee for the online duplicate bill?** No. The portal is free and needs no login.

**The portal says "no record found".** Check the letter (U or R) and count the digits: 14 for the reference number, 10 for the customer ID. New connections take a billing cycle to appear.

**Why does my bill show arrears?** An unpaid previous month, a late payment surcharge, or an adjustment (a fuel price adjustment, a quarterly tariff adjustment) approved by NEPRA and applied to everyone in that month. Adjustments are printed as separate lines on the bill.

**Can I change the name on the bill?** Yes, at the sub-division office, with proof of ownership or tenancy and the CNIC; the reference number stays the same.
