> Punjab has given car owners one more month to get the PVICS fitness certificate. Who needs it, what it costs and what happens after 15 November.

**Updated Friday 9 October 2026, 1pm PKT: deadline extended to 15 November.** The **Punjab vehicle fitness certificate deadline** has been pushed back by a month, from **15 October to Sunday 15 November 2026**, by the Punjab Provincial Transport Authority, [ProPakistani reported](https://propakistani.pk/2026/10/09/punjab-extends-deadline-to-get-vehicle-fitness-certificates/). The age rules have not changed: a car up to 1,000cc needs its first certificate five years after manufacture, 1,001cc to 2,000cc after six years, and above 2,000cc after seven. After 15 November, the Authority says vehicles that need a certificate and run without one face legal action, fines and other penalties under the rules. The Authority's notice carries a QR code that lists the PVICS centres; the [Punjab Transport Department](https://transport.punjab.gov.pk/vehicle-inspection-and-certification-system) site has the same information. The fee is unchanged, Rs 500 to Rs 2,000 by engine size: see the full table in our [PVICS charges guide](/guides/cars/pvics-charges-punjab-vehicle-fitness-certificate-fee). With only about 16 centres open at the end of September, booking early is still the safest plan.

*Earlier, Wednesday 7 October 2026, 6:45pm PKT: eight days left, and police told to act on smoky vehicles now.* The deadline was then still Thursday 15 October 2026. Separately, Punjab Police headquarters has written to every City Traffic Officer and District Police Officer ordering action against **smoke-emitting vehicles**, and against motorcycles and other vehicles without working headlights and taillights, with heavy vehicles, loaders and tractor-trolleys named in particular, [ProPakistani reported](https://propakistani.pk/2026/10/07/smoke-emitting-cars-banned-in-lahore/). The letter also orders joint operations by the traffic police, the Environment Protection Agency and the Transport Department, the same three bodies that run the fitness checks from 15 October. If your car is due a test (table below), book it this week: at Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for most cars, the test costs less than the Rs 2,000 first fine.

*Earlier, Monday 5 October 2026: 10 days to the deadline, still 15 October.* The **Punjab vehicle fitness certificate deadline** has not moved: from **Thursday 15 October 2026** the Transport Department, traffic police and other departments start joint checks on private cars without a valid certificate. Only about **12,000** of roughly **2.3 million** vehicles had been tested by 30 September, with **16 centres** open (11 in Lahore, five in other districts), [TechJuice reported](https://www.techjuice.pk/only-16-centres-for-2-3-million-vehicles-as-punjab-fitness-drive-nears/). The Provincial Transport Authority says 25 centres will soon be running in Lahore. No extension has been announced; if one is, it goes at the top of this page the same day.

**The fine:** the Transport and Mass Transit Department's instructions, as reported by [PakWheels](https://www.pakwheels.com/blog/punjab-govt-shares-instructions-and-deadline-for-vehicle-emissions-testing/) on 16 September, put it at **Rs 2,000 for a first offence and Rs 4,000 after that**, and say higher penalties can apply depending on the rule broken. Earlier reports gave a range of Rs 500 to Rs 2,000, and some said vehicles could be impounded where necessary.

## Which cars need the test

The test is due once a car reaches a certain age, based on engine size, and then **every year** after that:

| Engine | First test due after |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,000cc | 5 years |
| 1,001cc to 2,000cc | 6 years |
| Above 2,000cc | 7 years |

So a 2020 Suzuki Alto or Cultus (1,000cc) is already due. A 2020 Honda City or Toyota Corolla (1,300cc to 1,800cc) falls due from 2026. A newer car does not need one yet. The drive covers private cars and light transport vehicles first.

## PVICS charges: the fee table

Fees at the Provincial Vehicle Inspection and Certification System (PVICS) centres, as notified by the Provincial Transport Authority on 30 December 2025. Our [PVICS charges guide](/guides/cars/pvics-charges-punjab-vehicle-fitness-certificate-fee) has the notification, the VICS fees for taxis and goods vehicles, and re-test rules:

| Engine | Fee |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,000cc | Rs 500 |
| 1,001cc to 1,500cc | Rs 800 |
| 1,501cc to 2,500cc | Rs 1,000 |
| 2,501cc to 4,500cc | Rs 1,500 |
| Above 4,500cc | Rs 2,000 |

A pass gives you a **QR-coded sticker valid for one year**, which is how traffic police will spot compliant cars on the road. For most cars the fee is lower than a single fine.

## PVICS centres in Lahore and other cities

The Transport Department listed these licensed centres in September, [ProPakistani reported](https://propakistani.pk/2026/09/16/punjab-announces-locations-for-vehicle-fitness-certificates/); more have opened since, so ask at the nearest one before you drive across town.

| City | Centre |
|---|---|
| Lahore | Auto Aeon Valencia |
| Lahore | Auto Aeon Chuburji |
| Lahore | Auto Aeon Zaib Center |
| Lahore | Auto Aeon Begampura |
| Lahore | Bosch Longsight Motors |
| Lahore | AutoSure |
| Lahore | AutoSure, PSO on PIA Road |
| Lahore | Autoserai, Raiwind Road |
| Faisalabad | Auto Mechanix, Iqbal Stadium |
| Faisalabad | Auto Mechanix, West Canal |
| Multan | Auto Aeon |
| Rahim Yar Khan | Bosch Longsight Motors |
| Sadiqabad | Bosch Longsight Motors |

The centres are open **24 hours, including Sundays**, according to the department's instructions. With 10 days left and queues likely to grow near the deadline, a weekday night or early morning is the easiest time to go.

## What to bring

- **Punjab-registered car:** just the car. The centre reads its record from the registration number.
- **Registered in another province or Islamabad:** the registration card and the owner's CNIC, and the names must match.
- **Booking:** online through the operator's website without an account, or walk in. The test itself takes under five minutes when there is no queue.

## How to pass first time

1. **Clear your token tax** before you go. Check what you owe with our [token tax calculator](/tools/cars/token-tax-calculator) and the fees in our [car registration and token tax guide](/guides/cars/car-registration-and-token-tax).
2. **Fix the number plate** so it is properly displayed.
3. **Get a basic service:** clean or replace the air filter and spark plugs, and have the engine tuned. Worn plugs, dirty filters, a faulty oxygen sensor and a tired catalytic converter are the usual reasons cars fail.
4. **If you fail,** you are not banned. Repair the fault and test again.

## Report a smoky vehicle

Lahore traffic police take photos or videos of smoke-emitting vehicles, with the registration number, on WhatsApp at **0322-5638888**, [PakWheels reported](https://www.pakwheels.com/blog/lahore-traffic-police-wants-citizens-to-report-smoke-emitting-vehicles/) on 25 September.

## Also on Punjab's roads: pressure horns

The DIG Traffic has told every chief and district traffic officer in Punjab to act against pressure horns and needless honking near hospitals, schools and emergency centres. Commercial vehicle owners have been told to remove pressure horns immediately. More than **383,000** people have been fined for horn violations in Punjab this year, **48,000** of them in Lahore.

Both drives are part of the province's smog action plan ahead of winter, when Lahore's air quality is at its worst. Today's reading is on our [AQI Lahore page](/news/pakistan/aqi-lahore-today).
