# PIA keeps its IATA safety registration for a 12th time, valid to September 2028

Pakistan International Airlines has kept its IATA Operational Safety Audit registration for the 12th time running. The renewal is valid until **11 September 2028**, and it is the first safety renewal under chairman Lt Gen (Retd) Anwar Ali Hyder.

The audit itself was a Risk-Based IOSA, carried out in June 2026, before the new chairman took charge. The renewal was announced after he did.

## What IOSA covers

IOSA is IATA's own audit of how an airline runs its operations, not a government licence. The assessment went through flight operations, cabin operations, ground handling and cargo. An airline that fails loses its registration, and losing it is a practical problem: IATA membership requires it, and code-share partners and corporate travel buyers generally will not sign with an airline that is off the registry.

PIA has now held the registration continuously since its first audit, which is the fact the airline is leaning on. Registration runs in two-year cycles, so the next audit is due before September 2028.

## Why this one matters more than the previous eleven

PIA spent four and a half years locked out of Europe. EASA suspended its authorisation in June 2020 after the pilot licence scandal, lifted it in late November 2024, and PIA flew to Paris again in January 2025. The United Kingdom lifted its own ban in 2025 and PIA resumed UK flights after five years off the route.

Those markets are the ones that pay. Both regulators watch the audit record, so a clean IOSA renewal is the paperwork that keeps the Europe and UK schedule from being reopened as a question.

It also lands in the middle of privatisation. The airline has been through one failed sale attempt, and a safety registration valid to 2028 is an asset on the sale document rather than a liability a bidder has to price in.

## What it does not tell you

IOSA is an audit of systems and manuals, not a measure of whether your flight leaves on time or whether the fleet is young. It says nothing about PIA's fleet age, its on-time performance or its balance sheet. Passengers in Karachi and Lahore arguing about delays are arguing about something this audit does not measure.

For a traveller, the practical read is narrow and real: PIA's European and UK routes are not facing a safety-driven interruption in the next two years on this ground.
