> Upgrade to 29.5, 30.4, 31.2 or 32.1. Linux nodes were never exposed and no coins were at risk, as bitcoin slips under $80,000 (about Rs 2.21 crore).

**Bitcoin Core, the software that runs most of the nodes on the bitcoin network, has disclosed a flaw that let a remote attacker crash nodes running on Windows, macOS and BSD by filling their memory, and it was first found by an AI scan of the code.** The fix is already out in Bitcoin Core **29.5, 30.4, 31.2 and 32.1**, the project said in its [security advisory](https://bitcoincore.org/en/2026/10/28/disclose-tcp-oom/) on 28 October. Nodes running on Linux were never affected.

The disclosure landed as bitcoin itself slipped back **below $80,000**. The site's [bitcoin price page](/data/btc-usd) read **$79,795 at 12:41pm PKT on Thursday**, which at the interbank dollar rate of Rs 276.77 is about **Rs 2.21 crore** per coin.

## What the bug did

The advisory, titled "Unbounded memory growth through TCP urgent data on non-Linux systems", rates the flaw **medium severity** and "easily discoverable". A peer connected to a node could send a type of network data that piled up in the node's memory until it ran out and crashed. Only the older socket-monitoring code that Bitcoin Core uses on Windows, macOS and BSD was exposed; Linux nodes use a different method.

A crash does not put coins at risk: wallets and the blockchain are not changed. But a node that keeps going down cannot relay transactions or check blocks, which matters for exchanges, miners and anyone who runs a node to verify their own payments.

## Found by an AI, checked by people

The bug was flagged on **23 October** by an automated scan using a large language model, part of developer Elias Rohrer's Project Loupe at Spiral, the advisory says. Developer Gregory Sanders confirmed it and reported it to the security team the same day. A fix was merged and released in versions 31.2 and 32.1 on 27 October, and in 29.5 and 30.4 the next day, when the details went public. That is five days from discovery to disclosure.

CoinDesk [reported](https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2026/10/29/ai-found-a-way-to-crash-bitcoin-nodes-on-windows-and-macs-it-s-now-public) that the AI scan turned up three flaws in all, each verified by humans before it reached the project. The other two, also disclosed on 28 October, are a slower memory build-up from stalled connections and a low-severity overflow in the files a node keeps for chain reorganisations. They fell under Bitcoin Core's new policy, adopted on 22 October, of fixing and publishing "easily discoverable" bugs as fast as possible. Three more medium and high severity bugs, already fixed in version 30.0, are due to be disclosed in about two weeks, CoinDesk said.

## What to do if you run a node

* **Upgrade** to Bitcoin Core 29.5, 30.4, 31.2 or 32.1 (or later) from the official site.
* If you hold bitcoin on an exchange or a phone wallet, you do not need to do anything: you are not running Bitcoin Core yourself.
* Nodes on 32-bit machines, or storing blocks on FAT32 drives, stay exposed to the low-severity reorg bug even after the fix, according to the advisory, so move to 64-bit hardware and a modern file system.

## Why the price dipped

CoinDesk linked bitcoin's slide under $80,000 to a sell-off in tech shares after Samsung's results and to the US Federal Reserve's hawkish hold on Wednesday night.
