The federal government has raised the price of petrol by Rs 4.61 a litre, taking it to Rs 393.75, in a fresh revision notified through the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) and the Finance Division on 21 September 2026. High-speed diesel (HSD) went the other way, down Rs 1.96 to Rs 422.08 a litre.

Petrol was Rs 389.14 a litre before this change. Diesel was Rs 424.04.

## What it costs you

Most cars in Pakistan take 35 to 45 litres. On a 40-litre fill, petrol now costs Rs 15,750, up from Rs 15,565.60. That is Rs 184.40 more every time you fill the tank. A commuter who fills up once a week pays roughly Rs 740 more a month.

Diesel is the relief this round. A goods truck or tractor taking 50 litres saves Rs 98 a fill. For freight and farm operators running hundreds of litres a week, the small cut helps, but it does not undo the Rs 424 a litre level diesel has held all month.

## Why petrol rose when oil is falling

The increase lands even though Brent crude has slipped to around $100 a barrel, an 11-day low. Pump prices in Pakistan are not set by the global barrel alone. The bigger levers are the rupee, which weakened to about Rs 277.4 to the dollar, and the taxes stacked on each litre: the petroleum levy, which sits near its legal ceiling, plus distribution and dealer margins.

The timing is politically charged. The Jamaat-e-Islami march against inflation and the petroleum levy reached Multan this weekend, and the prime minister has offered talks on the levy. A higher petrol price in the same week hands the protest a fresh talking point.

## What to watch

The notification is framed as a short-cycle revision, so the next change could come sooner than the usual fortnight. Diesel drives transport and food prices, so its small cut is the number to watch for any easing in fares and vegetable rates. Petrol, up again, keeps pressure on household budgets already stretched by 11.1 percent inflation in August.
