> Eurobond proceeds pushed the State Bank's holdings to an all-time high in the week to 11 September. Total liquid reserves are now $26.79 billion.

State Bank of Pakistan reserves reached $21.389 billion in the week ended 11 September 2026, the highest level the central bank has ever held. The weekly rise was $3.06 billion, up from $18.328 billion.

Total liquid foreign reserves for the country are now $26.791 billion. Commercial banks hold the balance of $5.402 billion, up $15 million on the week.

## Where the money came from

The jump is Eurobond proceeds. Pakistan raised money on international markets and the dollars landed in the central bank's account in that week. This is borrowed money, not export earnings or remittances, and that distinction matters for how long the number holds.

Reserves built on a bond issue rise in one step and then drain steadily as imports are paid for and the bond's own coupons come due. Reserves built on a trade surplus or remittance growth behave differently.

## What it does to the rupee

The rupee closed at Rs 277.51 to the dollar on 17 September, against Rs 277.72 the day before. A stronger reserve position gives the State Bank more room to smooth the currency if pressure returns, which is the practical reason the number is watched.

It has not moved the rupee much so far. The daily moves of the past week have been inside 25 paisa. You can see the full run on our [dollar rate page](/data/usd-pkr), and the [currency converter](/tools/finance/currency-converter) works out what a given dollar amount is worth today.

## What it means if you are sending or receiving money

For overseas Pakistanis sending remittances home, nothing changes mechanically. Your rate is set by the interbank market and your channel's spread, not by the reserve headline.

What a higher reserve position does reduce, at the margin, is the risk of the sharp devaluation episodes that have cost savers real money in past years. If you hold rupee savings, that is the relevant read. If you hold dollars, a calmer rupee means less upside.

For importers and anyone waiting on an LC, a stronger reserve position historically comes with fewer administrative restrictions on opening letters of credit. That is the line to watch over the next few weeks rather than the headline figure itself.

## The context to keep

Reserves of $21.39 billion are a record in nominal dollar terms. Pakistan's import bill is also far larger than it was when earlier records were set, so import cover, not the headline number, is the measure that tells you how much cushion this actually buys. The State Bank publishes the weekly reserve position every Thursday.

Inflation is running at 11.1 percent year on year as of August, and the policy rate has been held at 11.5 percent since the September decision. Those two numbers, rather than the reserve total, are what will decide the cost of borrowing for the rest of this year.
