> The indicative price for the crop sown this season is Rs 112.50 a kilo, still Rs 500 below what farmers demanded. What changes for growers and for flour.

**The wheat price for 2027 is Rs 4,500 per maund (40kg), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Friday, Rs 1,000 more than last year's Rs 3,500.** That works out to Rs 112.50 a kilo, or Rs 11,250 for a 100kg bag, for the crop farmers are about to sow this Rabi season and will harvest next spring.

The Prime Minister's Office called it an "illustrative" or indicative price and said it reflects higher production costs, [Dawn reported](https://www.dawn.com/news/2039263/pm-sets-indicative-wheat-price-at-rs4500-per-maund-for-2027). The decision was taken in consultation with the chief ministers of Punjab and Sindh, Maryam Nawaz and Murad Ali Shah, and with guidance from President Asif Ali Zardari and PML-N president Nawaz Sharif.

## Wheat price 2027 at a glance

| | Last year | 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Per maund (40kg) | Rs 3,500 | Rs 4,500 |
| Per kg | Rs 87.50 | Rs 112.50 |
| Per 100kg bag | Rs 8,750 | Rs 11,250 |
| Farmers' demand | | Rs 5,000 per maund |

The per-kg and per-bag figures are our arithmetic from the announced maund price.

## Why the government raised it

The PM Office statement, reported by [Business Recorder](https://www.brecorder.com/news/40445633/pm-shehbaz-sets-proposed-wheat-price-for-2027-at-rs4500-per-maund), gave four reasons: farm inputs, fuel and inflation have pushed up the cost of growing wheat; farmers have struggled financially in recent seasons; Pakistan had to import wheat in each of the last two years; and a higher price should persuade more farmers to sow wheat this season. The prime minister said the price should let growers "cover their production costs and earn a reasonable profit".

Diesel for tractors and tubewells is one of the biggest of those costs. PSO's ex-depot price in Karachi is on our [diesel price page](/data/diesel-price), updated daily.

## Still Rs 500 short of what farmers asked

The announced price is Rs 500 a maund below the Rs 5,000 that the Pakistan Kissan Ittehad demanded in September. The farmers' body warned then that growers might skip wheat next season if the policy came late, and said many could not afford balanced fertiliser because they were not recovering their costs.

On 13 October the prime minister had said the price would be [announced after talks with the provinces and before sowing](/news/economy/wheat-price-to-be-announced-after-talks-with-provinces-before-sowing-says-pm). Sowing in Punjab and Sindh runs from late October into November, and certified seed already covers only about half of this season's need, as we [reported on 15 October](/news/economy/wheat-seed-shortfall-rabi-2026-27-govt-asks-companies-to-cut-prices).

## What it means for flour prices

The new price applies to next year's crop, so it does not change atta prices today. Sindh is already releasing government wheat at Rs 12,500 per 100kg bag from 15 October to keep flour supplies steady in the province. A higher purchase price next spring would raise the cost of the wheat that mills and provincial food departments buy from the 2027 harvest.

## What farmers should do now

- Decide your wheat acreage with Rs 4,500 a maund as the benchmark, and keep receipts for seed, fertiliser and diesel to compare against it at harvest.
- Buy certified seed early: supplies are short this season.
- Watch for the provincial procurement notifications in spring, which set how and where the government will buy.

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the wheat price for 2027 in Pakistan?**

Rs 4,500 per maund (40kg), announced by the prime minister on 23 October 2026. That is Rs 112.50 a kilo, up from Rs 3,500 a maund last year.

**Will atta become more expensive now?**

Not immediately. The price applies to the 2027 harvest, so it affects what mills and food departments pay for wheat from next spring.
