The census is filled in online, so the head of each school, or the IT teacher at larger schools, enters the school's figures on the module during the 11-day window. If your school had trouble in the trial run on 19 or 20 October, raise it with your AEO before 21 October rather than in the last days, when the system is busiest.

Before the window opens, keep these ready:

1. The current enrolment register, class by class.
2. The staff list with posts filled and vacant.
3. Details of rooms, toilets, drinking water, boundary wall, electricity and furniture, which school censuses normally record.
4. The school's EMIS code and login.

## Why the census matters

The schedule does not spell out how the data will be used, but the annual school census is the education department's main count of pupils, teachers and facilities, and it feeds decisions on teacher postings, budgets for missing facilities and school rationalisation. Figures entered wrongly, such as an undercounted enrolment, can cost a school a teacher post or funds, so heads should check entries before submitting.
