> She won an Academy Award for her first film, opposite Marlon Brando, and played Hitchcock's mysterious Eve Kendall opposite Cary Grant. She died at home in Los Angeles on 6 October.

**Eva Marie Saint, who won an Oscar for her very first film, On the Waterfront, and starred opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, has died at the age of 102.** She died on **Tuesday 6 October 2026 at her home in Los Angeles**, family representative Jeff Sanderson told the Associated Press. No cause of death was given. NPR also reported her death.

Saint was one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood's golden age, and her career ran for more than seven decades, from live television in the early 1950s to a Superman film in 2006.

## An Oscar with her first film

Born in **Newark, New Jersey, on 4 July 1924**, Saint came to film from television and the stage. Her first movie role was Edie Doyle in Elia Kazan's **On the Waterfront (1954)**, the gentle love interest of Marlon Brando's dockworker Terry Malloy. It won her the **Academy Award for best supporting actress**.

She was pregnant when she accepted the award from Frank Sinatra, and told the audience, "I think I may have the baby right here," the AP recalled. Her son Darrell was born two days later.

## North by Northwest and beyond

Five years later Hitchcock cast her as Eve Kendall, the cool, mysterious woman on the train in **North by Northwest (1959)**, one of the most famous thrillers ever made, which ends with Saint and Grant clinging to the faces on Mount Rushmore.

Her other films, according to the AP, include:

- **Raintree County** (1957), with Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift
- **Exodus** (1960), with Paul Newman
- **All Fall Down** (1962)
- **Because of Winn-Dixie** (2005)
- **Superman Returns** (2006), as Martha Kent
- **Winter's Tale** (2014)

## A television career too

Saint kept returning to television. She played Claudia on the series One Man's Family in the early 1950s, and a generation later she was Cybill Shepherd's mother in the 1980s hit **Moonlighting**. She won an **Emmy** for the 1990 miniseries **People Like Us**.

## Family

She was married for 65 years to the television and stage director **Jeffrey Hayden**, until his death in 2016. They had two children, a son, Darrell, and a daughter, Laurette, born in 1958.
