# Brent falls a sixth day to $99 on US-Iran talks: what it does to Pakistan's next fuel price

Brent crude slipped below **$99 a barrel** on Wednesday, its sixth straight session of losses, quoted at about **$99.05** against $99.25 the day before. Two things are pulling it down: renewed talks between Washington and Tehran, and work to restore a key Saudi pipeline knocked out earlier in the conflict.

President Donald Trump said officials held a "very productive" meeting with Iranian envoys on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, while saying in the same breath that he is still weighing whether to strike a deal or "annihilate the Islamic Republic". Markets are pricing the first half of that sentence.

## Why a North Sea benchmark sets your pump price

Pakistan imports most of the crude it refines and buys refined petrol and diesel on top. The notified ex-depot price is built from the international product price (Platts, not Brent directly), the premium paid to suppliers, freight, the exchange rate, the petroleum levy and the distribution and dealer margins. Brent is the number that moves the product price, and it feeds through with a lag of days, not hours.

So the arithmetic runs: Brent falls, Platts petrol and diesel quotes follow, OGRA recalculates, the Petroleum Division notifies. That is exactly what produced Wednesday's cut of **Rs 1.70 on petrol to Rs 392.05** and **Rs 3.12 on diesel to Rs 418.96**.

## The rupee is doing its bit too

The import bill is paid in dollars, so the exchange rate is the second lever. The rupee is at **Rs 277.13 to the dollar**, firmer than the Rs 277.43 of the previous session. A stronger rupee makes the same barrel cheaper in local money, which is why a small move in the currency can offset or amplify a move in crude. ## How often the price is moving now

Pakistan's fuel price used to be a fortnightly event on the 1st and the 16th. It has not behaved that way this month. Our own dated record on the [petrol price page](/data/petrol-price) shows the notified price moving repeatedly through September, in both directions, as the war premium in the oil market swung about. Treat any single notification as a snapshot rather than a fortnight's certainty.

## What this means for you this week

If crude keeps sliding, the next notification is more likely down than up, but nobody, including the refiners, is confident about where oil is headed while the talks are live. Two practical things follow.

**Does a fall in Brent mean petrol gets cheaper in Pakistan straight away?**

No. The notified price is built from Platts product quotes, supplier premiums, freight, the exchange rate and taxes, and it follows crude with a lag of days. The rupee can offset the move in either direction.
