AFP and several Pakistani outlets reported a higher figure of 31 dead on Saturday afternoon, a count that appears to fold in the attackers and casualties recorded at different hospitals. The operation ended on Saturday morning, 19 September 2026, about 21 to 22 hours after the assault began during Friday prayers. ## The FIR The case has been registered at the **Counter Terrorism Department police station** on the complaint of the SHO of Kohat City police station. The charges are terrorism, murder and attempted murder, among other offences. The FIR names the attackers as militants of Fitna al-Khawarij, the state's designation for the Pakistani Taliban. Pakistan has used near-identical language before cross-border strikes. ## The toll Among the police dead is SP Traffic Akbar Shinwari, along with officials from Special Branch and the Counter Terrorism Department. Dr Israel Orakzai, head of paediatrics at the District Headquarters Hospital, was among the civilians killed. ## How it unfolded The assault began during Friday prayers on 18 September with an explosives-laden vehicle detonated at the entrance of the old Police Lines compound, next to a mosque where police personnel and worshippers had gathered. An armed two-pronged assault followed, and a second explosion went off at the Special Branch section. The compound houses the Counter Terrorism Department, Special Branch and other police units. Elite Force commandos, CTD teams and Pakistan Army personnel ran the joint clearance operation through the night. A CTD Additional Inspector General was injured in the hand by a grenade and returned to oversee the operation. The Hafiz Gul Bahadur-led Ittehadul Mujahideen, a faction linked to the Pakistani Taliban and based in Afghanistan, claimed the attack. ## What officials said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed said police, CTD and security forces fought valiantly and called the personnel the pride of the nation. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the nation's morale cannot be dampened by cowardly acts of terrorism, and called the targeting of innocent citizens deeply regrettable and unacceptable. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari both condemned the attack. Funerals were held in Kohat on Saturday. ## The wider week Security forces killed 11 militants in operations in Panjgur and Chagai districts of Balochistan on the same day, according to state media. Two BLF militants were killed in a CTD operation in Karachi. Separately, a judicial superintendent was abducted from his home in South Waziristan Upper.
