> Eyesight, colour blindness and medical checks are now compulsory for new commercial licences, and current holders will be re-tested. Commercial vehicles are in 45% of Lahore's accidents.

**Lahore traffic police will reassess the medical fitness of drivers who already hold a commercial driving licence**, not just new applicants, [ProPakistani reported](https://propakistani.pk/2026/10/16/lahore-orders-new-medical-tests-for-existing-commercial-driving-license-holders/) on Friday 16 October 2026. The order comes from the Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Lahore after a crash in Garhi Shahu that killed three members of one family. If you drive a rickshaw, van, bus, truck or any vehicle on a commercial licence in Lahore, expect to be asked for a fresh medical check.

## What changes

- **New applicants for a commercial licence:** a medical examination, an eyesight test and a colour blindness test are compulsory before a licence is issued.
- **Existing commercial licence holders:** their medical fitness is to be checked again.
- **Fitness certificates for commercial vehicles:** the traffic police say there will be no concessions.

ProPakistani's report does not give a deadline for existing licence holders, the places where the re-test will be held, or a fee. Until the traffic police publish those details, keep your current licence and any medical certificate you already have with you.

## Why the traffic police are tightening checks

The CTO's office says commercial vehicles are about **8% of the vehicles on Lahore's roads but are involved in 45% of accidents**, and that driver negligence was found in most fatal crashes. Road accidents in the city are down about 16% on last year, according to the same report.

The move follows a string of measures against risky drivers. On 11 October [The Nation reported](https://www.nation.com.pk/11-Oct-2026/traffic-police-suspend-licences-170-drivers-involved-fatal-accidents) that City Traffic Police Lahore, under CTO Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, had suspended the licences of 170 drivers involved in fatal accidents, and that a licence will now be suspended after every fatal or serious accident, for at least a year in reckless driving cases.

## Where to get a medical certificate in Lahore

Since June, Lahore has offered **free medical fitness certificates** for commercial licence applicants and for anyone over 50 applying for or renewing a licence, at government hospitals including DHQ Mian Mir, DHQ Mozang, General Hospital Ghaziabad, THQ Sabzazar, Government Hospital Samanabad, Shahdara, Kahna and Raiwind hospitals, [ProPakistani reported](https://propakistani.pk/2026/06/16/punjab-introduces-free-medical-certification-for-driving-license-applicants/) at the time. That is the obvious route for the re-test as well, but the traffic police have not yet said so.

## What to do now

1. **Check your licence record** on DLIMS so you know its category and expiry: our [DLIMS licence check guide](/guides/cars/driving-licence-check-online-dlims-punjab-sindh) shows how.
2. **Budget for renewal:** if your commercial licence is due, see the [driving licence fee in Pakistan by province](/guides/cars/driving-licence-fee-in-pakistan-by-province) for Punjab's current fees.
3. **Get your eyes checked** before you are called: eyesight and colour vision are the tests most likely to stop a renewal.
4. **Fleet owners and transporters:** ask your drivers to keep their medical certificates with their licences, since the checks are aimed at commercial vehicles first.

We will add the deadline and test centres to this story when the Lahore traffic police announce them.
