**Vincent Kompany**, the Bayern Munich head coach, was taken to hospital on Friday 23 October after collapsing during a training session of the club's reserve team, Bayern said in a statement. He is undergoing "thorough examinations" and will stay under medical care. The club has not given a diagnosis.

Kompany, 40, was watching the second team train when he collapsed and needed treatment from an emergency medical team, according to the club and Dawn's report.

## What Bayern said

Max Eberl, Bayern's board member for sport, said Kompany's health is the club's "top priority" and that he will get all the care and time he needs. Until further notice, Kompany's coaching staff will run training and take charge of matches. Eberl said the staff has the club's full confidence.

## He had been unwell for a week

The collapse follows several days of illness. Kompany missed training and the pre-match press conference on Tuesday before Bayern's Champions League game against Arsenal. Assistant coach **Aaron Danks** said then that a virus had "affected his legs at times" and that Kompany needed rest. Kompany himself had said he caught a virus the week before and "didn't listen to my body", Dawn reported.
