> Pakistan's national cyber emergency team and NTC warn that what families share on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and X can tell strangers when a home is empty.

**Pakistan's National Cyber Emergency Response Team (NCERT) and the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) have told people to stop sharing their family's daily routines, locations and personal details on social media**, in a public awareness advisory [reported by ProPakistani](https://propakistani.pk/2026/10/15/govt-warns-against-posting-family-photos-online/) on 15 October 2026. Posts that show a home, a routine or who is where can tell a stranger when a house is empty and when family members are alone, the advisory says.

## What the advisory asks you to stop doing

- **Tagging your home location** or posting where you are in real time.
- **Posting daily routines:** school runs, gym times, the same café every evening, a parent's travel dates.
- **Sharing personal details of family members** on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and X.
- **Oversharing in general:** the advisory asks for "safer social media habits" and less personal information online.

## Ten minutes to make your accounts safer

The advisory gives the principle; these are the settings that put it into practice on most phones:

1. **Turn off location on the camera.** On Android, open the camera settings and switch off location tags; on iPhone, go to Settings, Privacy, Location Services, Camera, and choose Never. Old photos already posted can still carry location data.
2. **Post after, not during.** Share holiday or wedding photos once you are home.
3. **Lock down who sees what.** Set Facebook and Instagram posts to Friends or Close Friends, and review your follower list for accounts you do not know.
4. **Children's photos:** avoid school uniforms with the school's name, the front of your house and the number plate of your car in the same frame.
5. **Check old posts.** Facebook's "Limit past posts" setting changes every old public post to Friends in one step.
6. **Turn on two-step verification** on WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram so nobody can take over the account and message your contacts.

## If something goes wrong

Online harassment, blackmail with photos and account theft can be reported to the FIA's cybercrime wing (now the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency). Keep screenshots with dates and links before blocking anyone. If a SIM is used to take over your WhatsApp, check how many SIMs are issued on your CNIC through PTA's 668 service and block any you do not recognise; our guides on [PTA and telecom services](/guides/telecom) explain how.

## Frequently asked questions
