The reason is 6,000 km away, in a strait that normally carries a fifth of the world's oil and now sees about 13 ships a day. Pakistani drivers got a 43 paisa cut in petrol on Friday and a **Rs 3.47 rise in diesel**, taking high speed diesel to **Rs 424.92 a litre**. The two fuels moving in opposite directions is not a local quirk. It is the clearest sign yet that the Strait of Hormuz conflict has become a diesel problem rather than a crude oil problem. ## The strait, in numbers Before the war began on 28 February 2026, roughly **20 million barrels a day** moved through the Strait of Hormuz, about 20 per cent of world oil supply. Traffic is now down to an average of around **13 vessels a day**. The United States began blockading Iranian ports in April. Since then both sides have struck tankers, and Brent crude has gone from about $70 a barrel before the war to roughly **$102** this week, after easing 2 to 3 per cent on Thursday. ## Crude is only half the story Crude eased this week. Diesel did not, and that gap is what shows up on a Pakistani pump sign. Diesel is made in refineries, and the Gulf refineries closest to Hormuz are the ones whose output is hardest to lift and insure right now. When crude is available but diesel cargoes are not, the **crack spread**, the margin between crude and refined diesel, widens. Buyers competing for the same cargoes bid it wider still. In the United States diesel reached a record average of **$5.85 a gallon**. Pakistan imports most of its high speed diesel, priced off Platts Arab Gulf assessments, so a widening Gulf diesel premium lands in the fortnightly, now near-daily, notification from the Petroleum Division regardless of what crude did. ## What this costs a household in Pakistan Most Pakistanis do not buy diesel directly. They buy what diesel moves. - A Karachi to Lahore truck haul of about 1,200 km at 4 km a litre burns 300 litres. That is Rs 127,476 in fuel at the new rate, up Rs 1,041 from Thursday. - Tube wells in Punjab and Sindh running on diesel get dearer at exactly the wrong point in the rabi sowing calendar. - Diesel generators, still the backup for most shops and small factories, now cost roughly Rs 425 a litre to run. Freight is repriced within days, which is why a diesel notification reaches the sabzi mandi faster than it reaches most household budgets. ## What to watch next The single thing that would move Pakistani diesel down is normal traffic returning to Hormuz. Short of that, watch Gulf diesel cracks rather than the Brent headline, because they have been the better predictor of the last several notifications here.
