Sindh Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) is the teaching and degree-awarding arm of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT) in Karachi, recognised by the HEC as a private degree-awarding institution in 2009. Its programmes train doctors, nurses and medical technologists, mainly around kidney disease and transplantation. Doctors train in urology, nephrology, transplantation, gastroenterology and infectious diseases, and are prepared for CPSP fellowships and memberships. Research degrees on offer include MS/MD in Urology and Nephrology and MPhil and PhD in Basic Biomedical Sciences. The Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture (CBEC) runs a postgraduate diploma and a Master in Biomedical Ethics, the ZA School (set up in January 2005) trains medical technologists, and SIUT also runs a School of Nursing. Teaching happens at SIUT's main complex on Sardar Yaqoob Ali Khan Road near Civil Hospital Karachi, part of a network that SIUT says treats patients free of charge.
