Engro names Junaid Iqbal next CEO: the Careem operator takes over in April 2027
The board has approved Junaid Iqbal to succeed Ahsan Zafar Syed as president and chief executive of Engro Corporation when Syed's term ends.
Engro Corporation's board has approved Junaid Iqbal as the next president and chief executive, taking over from Ahsan Zafar Syed in April 2027 when Syed's current term ends.
Iqbal is currently advisor to the chief executive of Engro Holdings, which is the seat you put someone in when you intend to hand them the group. The nineteen-month runway before April 2027 is the point: he works alongside the operating businesses under Syed's mentorship first.
Who he is
Iqbal is best known for building Careem's Pakistan business, then running its Saudi Arabia market, and finally serving as managing director and global head of Careem Pay. That is a payments and operations track record rather than an industrial one, which matters for where Engro has been heading.
Before Careem he was chief executive of Elixir Securities, where he repositioned the firm and worked on privatisation transactions, including the government's $1 billion sale of a 40 per cent stake in HBL.
What Syed leaves behind
Syed's tenure covered the Supplemental Implementation Agreement for Engro Vopak Terminal, the reintegration of thermal assets, and the Deodar and EPCL transactions. On his exit he moves to counsel to the chairman of Engro Holdings rather than out of the group entirely.
Engro Corporation is one of the larger names on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, spanning fertiliser, energy, petrochemicals, telecom infrastructure and terminals. The KSE-100 closed at 170,884.58 points.
Why an outsider's profile for an industrial group
Engro's last decade has been about moving money out of legacy fertiliser and energy exposure and into things with a different growth curve. Putting a fintech and capital markets operator at the top is a signal about which direction the portfolio work continues in, not a change of business.
For minority shareholders, the useful detail is the length of the handover. A named successor nineteen months out removes the succession discount that hangs over a listed group when the chief executive's term is running down with no plan on the record.
