Five young men were killed early on Monday when the car they were travelling in hit a road divider on Bosan Road in Multan, slammed into the wall of a plot beside the road and caught fire. All five were from Shujabad tehsil in Multan district, and all died at the scene.

What happened on Bosan Road

Police told Dawn the crash took place at about 4am on 19 October. A passer-by called the control room at 4:15am. The car, a Toyota Corolla, was being driven at high speed when it struck the divider, according to police and rescue officials quoted by Dawn and ARY News. After the divider it hit a plot wall, and the impact started a fire in the engine.

Rescue 1122 fire tenders put out the blaze and recovered the five bodies from the wreck. "As a result of the accident, five individuals traveling in the car sustained severe injuries and died on the spot," Rescue 1122 said in its statement. All five had head injuries.

The victims

  • Five men, aged between 22 and 28
  • All residents of Shujabad tehsil, Multan district
  • Three were identified by Rescue 1122 at the scene (aged 22, 23 and 28); the other two were thought to be about 24 and 25

The bodies were taken to Nishtar Hospital, Multan. Hospital sources told ARY News they would be handed to the families after post-mortem examinations and legal formalities. Neither outlet has reported who was driving, and police have not yet said whether a case has been registered.

Punjab's road toll

The crash adds to a heavy count on Punjab's roads. Dawn, citing a Rescue 1122 report, said the province recorded 43,160 road crashes in May alone, with 23,013 people seriously injured and 434 killed. The Rescue 1122 department's secretary has voiced concern over the number of accidents, Dawn reported. In Monday's crash, police and rescue officials put it down to speed: the car was moving fast enough to clear the divider, hit a wall and catch fire.

What drivers can do

  • Keep to the limit on city dual carriageways, especially at night, when dividers and kerbs are harder to see.
  • Do not drive tired after a long day or a late journey back from another town.
  • In an emergency in Punjab, call Rescue 1122; the service runs fire, ambulance and recovery from the same number.
  • Make sure every driver in the family holds a valid licence: our guide to the driving licence fee in Pakistan by province lists the Punjab fees, the learner rule and the test, and the fuel average calculator shows how much harder driving at speed costs at the pump.
