Transporters strike from 10 October: goods carriers threaten nationwide wheel-jam over containers and diesel
The All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association wants seized containers released, Rs 20,000 to Rs 35,000 compensation and cheaper diesel. Here is what a stoppage would mean.
Transporters strike from 10 October: the All Pakistan Goods Transporters Association says trucks and goods carriers across the country will stop running from Friday 10 October 2026 unless the federal and provincial governments meet its demands. The association's president, Nabeel Mahmood Tariq, announced the wheel-jam strike in Lahore with senior vice president Haji Irfan Sultan and vice president Mumtaz Ali Khan, ProPakistani reported.
The deadline is eight days away, so there is still room for talks. If the strike goes ahead, it hits the movement of food, fuel, cement, steel and export cargo between Karachi's ports and the rest of the country.
What the transporters want
The association lists five demands, 24 News reported:
- Relief under its charter of demands, which it says the governments promised during earlier strikes and have not delivered.
- Immediate release of goods vehicles and containers seized during earlier protests.
- Compensation of Rs 20,000 and Rs 35,000 per container for owners whose vehicles were held.
- An end to roadside stops and fines over sales tax invoices.
- A cut in the price of diesel.
Why containers are the flashpoint
Police have been requisitioning containers to block roads into Islamabad ahead of the opposition PTI's march planned for 4 October. More than 2,000 vehicles were taken in September, and containers are piling up at Karachi port because truckers are refusing northbound loads to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Peshawar and Attock, Business Recorder reported. Some operators have stopped going beyond Gujranwala. Daily demurrage on a held container runs Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000, the paper said.
Diesel is the other cost. PSO's ex-depot Karachi price was Rs 399.34 a litre on 2 October (see the diesel price page for the daily history), and freight rates follow it closely.
What it means for you
- Prices: transport already pushes up the cost of everything that moves by road. Business Recorder noted that transport costs rose 27.43% year on year in September, against overall inflation of 10.26% (our CPI page).
- Deliveries: if you run a shop or a factory, expect slower northbound deliveries this week while containers are being held around Islamabad, and plan stock for a possible stoppage from 10 October.
- Fuel budget: work out what your own trips cost at today's prices with the fuel cost calculator.
We will update this story if the government and the transporters reach an agreement or the strike is called off.
