PCB puts $200,000 on the table for the PSL franchise that develops most

The PCB has announced a $200,000 award for the Pakistan Super League franchise that has contributed most to cricket development in Pakistan. It is called the PSL Cricket Development Excellence Award, and at the current rate of Rs 277.42 to the dollar it is worth about Rs 5.55 crore.

Every franchise is eligible. The inaugural award is assessed across a long window, PSL 3 through PSL 11, which rewards franchises that built academies and pathways years ago rather than ones that ran a good camp last season. From next year, only the two most recent seasons count.

How the score is built

The final result is 80 percent assessment committee and 20 percent fan voting.

The process

1. Franchises self-assess against a scoring model built by the PCB.
2. They submit the self-assessment with evidence.
3. A five-member independent committee verifies each submission against data rather than taking the claim at face value.
4. Franchises publish presentations on PSL social media channels, and fans vote on those.

The verification step is the part worth watching. A self-assessment with a fan vote attached would reward marketing. Requiring evidence and having an outside committee check it against data is what separates this from a popularity contest, and the PCB will be judged on whether that committee actually marks anyone down.

Why the PCB is doing this

Franchise contributions to development have been uneven. Some sides have run genuine academies, talent hunts and age-group programmes in their cities; others have treated the franchise as six weeks of cricket a year. A cash award attached to a published scorecard makes the difference visible, and a franchise that scores badly in front of its own fans has a commercial reason to fix it.

It also lands the same week the PCB started its nationwide school talent hunt across 1,400 schools and 21,000 players, which is the pipeline the franchises are being scored on feeding.

The open question is whether $200,000 is large enough to change a franchise's spending. Against the cost of running a real academy for a year, it is a contribution, not a budget.
