Agriculture loans: banks are to lend Rs 1,500 billion (Rs 1.5 trillion) to farmers by June 2027, and had already lent Rs 1,352 billion by the end of September 2026, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was told on Friday 9 October at a meeting in Islamabad with the heads of the country's 10 largest commercial banks, ProPakistani reported.

Agriculture loans: the numbers

  • Target: Rs 1,500 billion by June 2027.
  • Lent so far: Rs 1,352 billion, to 3,455,313 borrowers.
  • Borrower target: 4.5 million farmers by June 2027, so about a million more people have to get a loan in nine months.

The prime minister told the banks that farm credit is essential to farmers' livelihoods, crop output and food security, and that the big banks must also serve small farmers, not only large landowners, so that they can pay for better seed, machinery and modern methods.

SME loans

About 350,862 business owners have received Rs 1,137 billion in small and medium enterprise loans. The target for June 2027 is Rs 1,500 billion and 565,000 borrowers. Shehbaz Sharif called SMEs "the backbone" of the economy.

Apna Ghar housing loans

The gap is widest in housing. Under the Apna Ghar programme, Rs 426 billion in loans has been approved but only Rs 76 billion disbursed, under a fifth. The aim for 2026-27 is Rs 700 billion to build and hand over 125,000 homes, and the government is consulting on how developers can get financing more easily. If you are weighing a home loan, our home loan calculator shows the monthly instalment for any amount, rate and term.

What it means for you

  • Farmers: with banks under pressure to reach the target, this is a good season to ask your branch about crop loans for the rabi sowing. Take your CNIC, land record (fard) and a crop plan.
  • Small businesses: the SME target means banks are looking for borrowers; compare the instalment on any offer with the personal loan calculator before you sign.
  • Rates: the report gives no interest rates. Bank loans are priced off KIBOR, which you can follow on our KIBOR page.
