Dana White: Gane is not undisputed champion, 'he still got to fight'

Updated 20 September, 7:30am PKT. Ciryl Gane will not be handed the undisputed UFC heavyweight title. Asked directly whether Tom Aspinall's decision to vacate makes Gane undisputed champion, Dana White said: "Does it make him the undisputed champion? No. He still got to fight."

That reverses the usual mechanic. When a champion gives up a belt, the interim champion is normally promoted. White's answer, given in an interview with former UFC fighter Diana Belbita, means Gane keeps the interim tag and has to win a fight for the vacant title instead.

Who Gane fights for the vacant belt

Two names are in the frame:

• Josh Hokit, undefeated, who called for the shot the moment Aspinall vacated.
• Alex Pereira, in a rematch. Gane finished Pereira to take the interim title at UFC Freedom 250.

White said Gane would be back "soon". No opponent, event or date has been announced.

How it came to this

• 25 October 2025, UFC 321, Abu Dhabi: Aspinall's first title defence against Gane was ruled a first-round no contest after Gane accidentally poked him in both eyes.
• The months after: Aspinall had several eye procedures.
• This year: with a fight date agreed and sparring going well, "an accident caused further damage to my right eye," he said, leading to more surgery and infections.
• June 2026: Gane won the interim title by finishing Alex Pereira.
• 14 September 2026: Aspinall (15-3) vacated the belt, saying he did not want to hold the division up. He is not retiring.
• 19 September 2026: White rules out promoting Gane.

Why this matters for the division

Heavyweight has not had an undisputed title defence since October 2025. Making Gane fight for the vacant belt adds another card before that clock restarts, but it also settles the belt in the cage rather than by announcement, which is the argument White is making.

Alex Pereira has been trolling Gane with a "champion" jab since Aspinall's exit. That rematch is the one with the most money attached.

Why Pakistani fans should care

Abu Dhabi, where Aspinall was injured, is the closest regular UFC venue to Pakistan and a short flight from Karachi, Lahore or Islamabad. A vacant-title heavyweight fight booked for the Gulf would land in prime time here, since the UAE is only one hour behind Pakistan.
