Residents of Islamabad lost more than Rs 3 billion in cash and valuables to robberies, thefts, snatchings and burglaries between 1 January and 30 September 2026, according to Islamabad Police data reported by ProPakistani on Saturday. Police recorded at least 4,504 cases across those categories. Six people were killed and 44 injured, 22 of them by gunfire.

What was taken

  • Cash: over Rs 998 million
  • Valuables: Rs 1.69 billion, including 868 tolas of gold
  • Vehicles: 97 cars and other vehicles, and 1,905 motorcycles (the category list shows 84 car thefts and 1,667 motorcycle thefts)
  • Mobile phones: 1,781

At today's gold rate of about Rs 435,800 a tola for 24 karat, 868 tolas would be worth roughly Rs 378 million, though the police figure does not say what purity the stolen gold was.

Robberies caused five of the six deaths. Burglaries hit homes most (512 of the 627 cases), and thieves also took laptops, vehicle batteries, tyres, transformers, bicycles, 105 animals and two Safe City cameras. The category counts add up to more than the 4,504 total, and the report does not explain the gap.

Police sources told ProPakistani the real numbers may be higher, because some FIRs involving foreigners and influential people are said to be kept confidential. DIG Operations Ali Waseem said arrests had been made and property recovered, but had not shared figures three days after being asked, the report said.

How to cut your risk

  1. Lock your motorcycle with a disc or chain lock and park where there is a camera; motorcycles are the most stolen item in the city by far.
  2. Keep phones out of sight at signals and on main roads, where snatchers on bikes work fastest.
  3. Do not keep large amounts of cash or gold at home; a bank locker is safer.
  4. Report every crime on 15 or at the police station and get an FIR number; you will need it to claim insurance or to have a stolen phone blocked.
