Karachi weather: city hits 38.7°C in October, Met Office warns 40°C is possible
Karachi's 'second summer' is here. Tuesday's high was 38.7°C with 43% humidity, and a high-pressure system that has choked the sea breeze could push it past 40°C.
Karachi weather today: the city recorded a high of 38.7°C on Tuesday 13 October, and a Met Office official has warned that the mercury could reach 40°C if the trend holds. Humidity was 43%, low by Karachi standards but enough to make the afternoon feel heavy, Dawn reported on Wednesday.
Why Karachi is this hot in mid-October
The official told Dawn that a high-pressure area in the upper atmosphere has weakened the winds over the city. When the sea breeze from the south-west drops, Karachi loses its natural air conditioning and daytime temperatures climb quickly, even late in the year.
This is not unusual. October is often called Karachi's "second summer": the monsoon has gone, the sea breeze is unreliable, and the cool northerly winds of winter have not yet arrived. Hot spells in the high 30s are a feature of most Octobers.
What 38.7°C means for you
- Heat and water. Drink water through the day, not only when thirsty, and keep children, older relatives and outdoor workers out of the direct sun between noon and 4pm.
- Power use. Air conditioners will run longer this week, and extra units can push a bill into a higher slab. Work out your own figure with our AC running cost calculator and check what the extra units do to your slab with the electricity bill calculator.
- Load management. K-Electric has ended its temporary night-time load management after RLNG supply resumed, so hotter nights should not mean extra cuts on that account. Our K-Electric story has the details, and the KE duplicate bill guide shows how to check what you owe.
How long will it last?
The Met Office has not given an end date. Its warning is conditional: 40°C is possible if the current pattern continues. Relief usually comes when the sea breeze returns, which can happen within days once the high-pressure system shifts. Check today's Karachi weather and forecast before planning outdoor work or travel in the afternoon.
We will update this page if the Met Office issues a formal heatwave advisory for Karachi or Sindh.
