KP police shuhada package: Rs17 million for a constable's family, up from Rs11 million

Families of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police officers killed on duty will now get Rs17 million at the rank of constable to inspector, up from Rs11 million, under a revised shuhada package announced by Governor Faisal Karim Kundi in Peshawar on Friday, Dawn reported.

Kundi has run the province since the federal government imposed an emergency and governor's rule in KP on 11 October. On Tuesday he asked officials for proposals on police pay and welfare, and the package was announced three days later at a Governor House ceremony where heirs of 54 police martyrs received allotment letters, ProPakistani reported.

Compensation for police killed on duty

Cash instead of a plot

Families used to be offered a plot, often in a district far from where they lived. That is replaced by cash:

• constables and head constables: Rs18m (instead of a 5-marla plot)
• ASIs, SIs and inspectors: Rs25m (instead of 7 marla)
• DSPs and ASPs: Rs30m (instead of 10 marla)
• SP and SSP rank and above: Rs70m (instead of 1 kanal)

Injuries, family members and off-duty deaths

• Permanent disability: Rs5m (was Rs500,000)
• Severe injury: Rs1.5m (was Rs100,000)
• An officer's spouse or child killed: Rs5m; a parent or sibling: Rs3m
• Officers killed off duty: Rs4m (constable to inspector), Rs5m (DSP and ASP), Rs7m (SP, SSP, grade 18 to 19)

Daughters of martyred officers will get Rs1 million towards their weddings, and a new fund will pay for martyrs' children's education, including study abroad.

Pay rise and recruitment

Kundi also said police salaries had been raised and would be higher than in other provinces, but neither Dawn nor ProPakistani published the new scales, and no notification has been made public yet. He said recruitment would be speeded up to fill 17,000 vacant posts in KP Police.

Why it matters now

The package comes as the governor's rule itself is being challenged: the Peshawar High Court is due to hear PTI's petition against the emergency and governor's rule on 20 October.
