KP sanitation fee from October: Rs 100 to Rs 200 a month for homes, Rs 1,000 for hotels

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will start charging a monthly sanitation fee from October 2026, under a circular issued by the provincial government for its urban cleanliness drive.

The residential rate depends on plot size. The plot-size bands have not been published in the reports of the circular, so check the exact band for your house with your Tehsil Municipal Administration or the local water and sanitation company.

Who does not pay

The circular exempts mosques, seminaries, government schools and other specified institutions.

Where it applies

The fee is aimed at urban areas where municipal and sanitation services collect waste. The circular's list of towns has not been published in the reports, so if you live in Peshawar or another KP city, confirm with your Tehsil Municipal Administration. How it is collected (a separate bill, or added to an existing water or municipal bill) has not been stated in the reports yet. Keep an eye on your October bills.

What it means for your budget

For a family in a mid-sized house in Peshawar the fee is Rs 150 a month, or Rs 1,800 a year. A shopkeeper pays Rs 3,000 a year, and a petrol pump or hotel Rs 12,000.

What to do

1. Find your plot size on your registry or allotment papers so you can check you are charged the right band.
2. Ask for a receipt for every payment; do not pay cash to anyone at the door without an official receipt.
3. Report missed collections to your TMA or sanitation company. The government has asked residents to dump waste only at designated points.
