Milk price in Karachi: dairy farmers threaten Rs 300 a litre, up from Rs 240

The milk price in Karachi could jump from the notified Rs 240 a litre to Rs 300 if the city's dairy farmers carry out their latest warning. On Wednesday, 30 September 2026, the farmers asked the Karachi administration for a Rs 60 a litre increase and said they would set the retail rate at Rs 300 themselves if no new notification is issued, ARY News reported.

Nothing has changed yet. The official rate is still the one the Commissioner Karachi notified from 1 April 2026.

The official milk price in Karachi today

The notification says no individual or association may charge above these rates and that milk must be sold in measurable quantities. Before that, the retail rate had been Rs 220 since June 2024, so the April notification was a Rs 20 rise.

What the farmers are asking for

Shabbir Dar, speaking for the dairy farmers, said current rates no longer cover costs and accused the commissioner's office of delaying a formal meeting despite several appeals. His numbers:

• Demand: Rs 60 more per litre, which would take retail milk to Rs 300.
• Cattle feed: a bag that cost Rs 800 now costs Rs 1,700, by his account.
• Other costs: veterinary medicine, electricity, labour, water and transport, which he linked to higher petrol and diesel prices.

Fuel has in fact been expensive this month. PSO's ex-depot Karachi price for diesel reads Rs 402.24 a litre today and petrol Rs 387.54, according to our diesel price and petrol price pages.

The same threat was made in March, when the Dairy Cattle Farmers Association said milk would cross Rs 300 after Eid and the commissioner said no increase had been notified and violations would be dealt with (Dawn, 10 March 2026). That round ended with the Rs 240 notification instead.

What Rs 300 milk would cost a Karachi household

A Rs 60 rise is 25% on the current notified price. For a family buying 2 litres a day:

That is Rs 3,600 more a month, or about Rs 43,200 a year. A household on 1 litre a day would pay Rs 1,800 more a month. For comparison, national CPI inflation was 11.1% year on year in August (CPI data), so the demand is more than double the general rise in prices.

What you can do now

1. Pay the notified rate. Until the commissioner issues a new notification, Rs 240 a litre is the legal retail price in Karachi.
2. Ask for measured quantities. The April notification requires milk to be sold by measure, so ask the shop to measure a full litre.
3. Report overcharging. Retail prices of essentials in the city are fixed and enforced by the Commissioner Karachi's office (commissionerkarachi.gos.pk), so take a complaint about a shop charging above Rs 240 to your deputy commissioner's office.

What happens next

The farmers want a meeting and a new notification. The administration has not yet responded publicly to the Rs 300 warning. We will update this page when a new rate is notified or if shops start charging above Rs 240.
