Rain in Islamabad and Rawalpindi today: 33mm in Saidpur, rain emergency in Pindi

Searching for Islamabad weather or Rawalpindi weather today? Heavy rain hit the twin cities on the morning of Monday, 28 September 2026, and Rawalpindi declared a rain emergency. The good news: Nullah Leh stayed within normal limits and the forecast for the rest of the week is mainly dry.

How much rain fell

The figures differ slightly between reports because they were taken at different times of the morning. Dawn's later tally, published at 12:17pm, gave the highest readings:

Saidpur village in the Margalla foothills recorded the most, followed by Shamsabad and Pirwadhai on the Rawalpindi side.

Nullah Leh: normal, not dangerous

Nullah Leh is the number Pindi residents watch in any downpour. On Monday it read 5 to 5.5 feet at Katarian and 2 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge, which the authorities called normal.

Rain emergency: where WASA is working

Rawalpindi Commissioner Salman Ghani put civic departments on high alert and WASA Rawalpindi declared a rain emergency. Its managing director moved all field officers out and deployed heavy machinery and staff at the usual trouble spots:

• Liaquat Bagh
• Committee Chowk underpass
• Murree Road
• Dhok Khabba
• Circular Road
• Low-lying parts of Sadiqabad

The WASA control room is monitoring rainfall and drainage continuously, with Rescue 1122 and the waste management company on standby.

What to do if you are travelling today

1. Avoid the Committee Chowk underpass and Murree Road near Liaquat Bagh while pumping is under way.
2. If you are heading to Peshawar, the M-1 motorway reopened to all traffic today after a five-day closure.
3. Two-wheeler riders: water collects fastest in Dhok Khabba and Sadiqabad, so take the main roads.
4. For an emergency, call Rescue 1122.

Forecast for the rest of the week

According to the Met Office forecast reported by Dawn, the rest of the week should be mainly dry across most of the country. Isolated rain and thunderstorms are possible in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan.
