Mobile phone imports fall 8.85pc to $274m: what it means for handset prices

Pakistan imported $274.129 million worth of mobile phones in July and August 2026, down 8.85 per cent from $300.741 million in the same two months last year. August alone came to $133.695 million, a 13.82 per cent drop on August 2025 and 4.80 per cent below July 2026. The figures are from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Three consecutive readings pointing down is not noise. Fewer dollars of handsets are crossing the border than a year ago.

Why imports are falling

Two things are happening at once, and they pull in opposite directions for prices.

Local assembly keeps taking share. Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Infinix, Tecno, Xiaomi and Realme all now assemble in Pakistan under the Mobile Device Manufacturing Policy. A phone assembled here shows up in the trade data as imported components at a lower declared value than a completely built unit, or not in the phone line at all. So part of the 8.85pc fall is a shift in where the phone is put together, not a fall in how many Pakistanis bought one.

Demand is genuinely thinner at the top. A completely built flagship carries PTA registration tax that can run past Rs 100,000 on its own, on top of the handset price. Household budgets absorbing 11.1pc inflation are not the ones clearing $1,000 phones. What it means if you are buying

Falling import value does not mean falling shop prices. The rupee, PTA tax and the maker's own list price decide what you pay, and only the first of those has moved in your favour this quarter, from 277.43 to 277.13 to the dollar (our USD to PKR page).

Practical reads:

• Locally assembled models are where the discounting is, because that is where the volume is. Our mobile price list carries official Pakistan prices by brand from the makers' own pages.
• An imported phone bought abroad still needs PTA registration within 60 days of arrival to keep working on a Pakistani network past that window. Registration is per IMEI and is not transferable with the handset the way people assume.

The number to watch

Mobile imports are one of the cleanest monthly proxies for discretionary spending in Pakistan, because almost nobody replaces a working phone in a bad month. Two more readings at this level and it stops being a story about assembly policy and becomes a story about household budgets.
