SoftBank raises $10bn in bonds to pay its third OpenAI tranche by 1 October
Dollar notes across 3.5, 5.5 and 7.5 years plus a EUR 1bn euro leg, pricing on 24 September. The bond replaces a $10bn bridge loan.

SoftBank Group has launched $10 billion of dollar notes and EUR 1 billion of euro bonds to fund the third tranche of its follow-on investment in OpenAI. Citigroup and JPMorgan are lead bookrunners.
The dollar leg comes in 3.5, 5.5 and 7.5-year maturities and the euro leg in 4 and 6-year maturities. Pricing is expected on 24 September and settlement on 29 September, which lines up against an OpenAI investment closing expected on 1 October.
The bridge is being termed out
SoftBank had already arranged a $10 billion bridge loan to make the payment. This bond issue replaces it. That is a normal sequence, but the size tells you something about how AI capital is being raised now: not from cash piles, but from debt markets, in size, on a fixed calendar.
Coupons and spreads were not disclosed in the term sheet. Those land at pricing on 24 September and are the number worth watching, because they are the market's live opinion on how much risk sits in a leveraged bet on one private AI company.
Why a Pakistani reader should care
Two reasons, both indirect but real.
The first is the cost of money. When a borrower of this size takes $11 billion equivalent out of the dollar and euro bond markets in a single week, it competes for the same pool of yield-seeking capital that frontier and emerging market issuers draw on. Pakistan's own external borrowing plans and the pricing on any future dollar issue sit downstream of that appetite.
The second is the AI build-out itself. OpenAI's capital goes largely into compute, and compute means data centres, which means power. Pakistan's IT services exporters sell into the firms building on top of these models. A funding round of this size is a signal that the demand side of that chain is not cooling, whatever the argument about valuations.
Context
This lands in the same week Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang publicly dismissed AI extinction warnings as "doomsday narratives", and while the US administration floated an "AI Force" and a new AI adviser. The money and the rhetoric are moving in the same direction.
