Jolta JE-125L at Rs 329,900: what an electric 125 really costs to run

Jolta Electric has launched the JE-125L in Pakistan at Rs 329,900. It is built as a conventional motorcycle rather than a scooter, so it looks like the 125 everyone already rides, with an electric motor where the engine used to be.

The reverse gear matters more than it sounds. Electric bikes are heavy at the back, and reversing out of a parking spot on a loaded bike is the thing riders complain about first.

The sum that decides it

A petrol 125 costs roughly a third of this. So the case has to be made on running cost, and on that the arithmetic is not close.

Petrol is Rs 393.75 a litre. A 125cc bike that returns 40 km to the litre costs Rs 984 to cover 100 km. At 45 km to the litre it is Rs 875. Work out your own bike's figure with the fuel average calculator, then price the trip with the fuel cost calculator.

The JE-125L's battery holds about 3 kWh. Charging it from empty is 3 units of electricity plus charging losses, so call it 3.3 to 3.6 units in practice. What that costs depends entirely on your slab, and domestic slabs in Pakistan run from the low twenties to the high fifties in rupees per unit before taxes. Even at the higher end, a full charge sits well under a third of what 100 km of petrol costs. At 100 km of claimed range you are comparing something in the low hundreds of rupees against Rs 875 to Rs 984.

The parts nobody puts on the poster

Range is claimed, not measured, and claimed range on Pakistani roads with a pillion and a Karachi summer is not the same number. Treat 100 to 120 km as a ceiling.

The battery is the bike. LiFePO4 cells last longer than the lead-acid packs on cheaper electric bikes, but a replacement pack is the single largest cost you will face after purchase, and Jolta has not published a replacement price alongside the launch.

Charging infrastructure is your own wall socket. A 3 kWh pack on a standard domestic outlet is an overnight job, not a coffee break, so this is a bike for someone with a garage or a reserved parking spot with power.

At Rs 329,900 the payback against a Rs 110,000 petrol 125 runs into years, not months, for a rider doing short daily distances. For someone covering 60 to 80 km a day, six days a week, the numbers turn much faster.
