Bitcoin hits an eight-month high near $85,000: Rs 2.34 crore a coin
Bitcoin is up almost 5 per cent in 24 hours as falling oil takes the heat out of the inflation trade. In rupees, one coin has gained about Rs 1.4 crore off the September low.

Updated Monday 21 September, 3:45pm PKT. Bitcoin is at $84,263, up 4.9 per cent in 24 hours and trading at its highest level since January. It touched $85,000 earlier in the session. Ether is at $2,712.74, up 5.4 per cent. Source: CoinGecko spot.
At the interbank dollar rate of Rs 277.93 on our dollar rate page, one bitcoin is worth about Rs 2.34 crore. Ether is about Rs 7.54 lakh.
What moved it
Oil did the work. Brent has fallen for four straight sessions, its longest losing run in three months, as Washington and Tehran talked about restoring crude flows through Hormuz. Cheaper energy takes pressure off the inflation numbers that have kept the US Federal Reserve hawkish, and a less hawkish Fed is the single most reliable thing bitcoin trades on.
The second leg is positioning ahead of the Trump and Xi meeting later this week. Risk assets across Asia rallied on the same trade.
The move also squeezed people who were short. Bitcoin fell through the first half of September, bottoming at $75,590 on 16 September, and a lot of desks were positioned for that to continue. When the price broke back above $80,000 those positions had to be bought back, which is why the last leg moved fast.
The rupee arithmetic
The swing is easier to feel in rupees than in percentages.
- At Wednesday's $75,590 low: about Rs 2.10 crore a coin
- Now, at $84,263: about Rs 2.34 crore a coin
- The difference: roughly Rs 24 lakh a coin in five days
Rs 100,000 buys about 0.0043 of a bitcoin at today's rate, or roughly $360 worth. Our currency converter will do the open market rate instead, which usually runs a rupee or two above interbank.
One thing to hold on to: your rupee return is the coin's dollar move plus whatever the rupee does. The rupee weakened today, from Rs 277.25 to Rs 277.93, so rupee holders got slightly more than the dollar move. That works in reverse just as easily.
Where this sits in the year
Bitcoin is now back above its 50-week moving average, a level chartists watch because it has historically preceded extended runs. It is also still below the highs of January. A strong week is not a strong year, and the same pattern has reversed inside a week twice this month.
The honest read: this is an oil and Fed trade, not a crypto-specific one. If the Hormuz talks fall apart, oil goes back up, the inflation picture worsens, and the thing that carried bitcoin here reverses.
