Peshawar gas shutdown Tuesday: no gas in Cantt, LRH, Gulberg from 9pm to 5am

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) will cut the gas supply to several parts of Peshawar for about eight hours from 9pm on Tuesday 20 October until 5am on Wednesday 21 October, ProPakistani reported, citing the company's notice.

Areas with no gas

• Peshawar Cantonment (Cantt)
• Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) and the area around it
• Nauthia
• Gulberg
• Charsadda Road
• Pajaggi Road
• the neighbourhoods around these areas

If you live just off one of these roads, assume you are affected.

Why the gas is being cut

SNGPL is relocating the main gas pipeline at the Zakori flyover on GT Road. Work on a main line means the pressure has to be brought down for the whole network fed from it, which is why the shutdown runs overnight, when demand is lowest.

What to do before 9pm Tuesday

• Cook dinner early and keep tea and food for the night in a flask.
• If your home relies on a gas geyser, fill water for the morning before 9pm.
• Switch off every gas appliance (stoves, heaters, geysers) once the supply drops, and leave them off until morning. SNGPL warns that an appliance left open can leak gas into the room when the supply returns.
• When the gas is back, open a window before you light the first burner.
• Do not use a compressor on the line to pull gas when it returns at low pressure: it is dangerous for you and your neighbours.

Shops, hotels and hostels in Cantt and Gulberg that cook overnight or early in the morning should arrange LPG cylinders in advance. Families staying near Lady Reading Hospital with patients should plan their night meals before 9pm.
