Gas load shedding in Rawalpindi: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) will suspend gas supply across a large part of Rawalpindi city and cantonment from 8:30pm on Saturday 17 October until 6am on Sunday 18 October, a company spokesperson said, ProPakistani reported.

The shutdown is needed to connect a section of SNGPL's main pipeline that has been moved for the Peshawar Road underpass. Supply is expected back at 6am.

Which areas lose gas

  • Both sides of Murree Road, from Saddar to Faizabad
  • Peshawar Road between Golra Mor and Saddar, including Qasim Market and Westridge
  • Localities along Adiala Road
  • Localities along GT Road

SNGPL has asked consumers in these neighbourhoods to make alternative arrangements for the night.

How to plan for a 9.5-hour cut

  • Cook early. The cut starts at 8:30pm, so finish dinner and fill flasks with hot water before then.
  • Turn every gas appliance off at the knob before 8:30pm, including geysers and heaters. When pressure returns at 6am, an appliance left open can leak gas into the room before the pilot relights.
  • Check before relighting. In the morning, open a window, check for the smell of gas, then light burners and geysers one at a time.
  • Do not run a generator or a charcoal angithi indoors as a substitute heater; both give off carbon monoxide.

Your bill and complaints

An overnight works shutdown does not change how your bill is worked out, since SNGPL bills by the units your meter records. To check what this month's bill should be, use our gas bill calculator, and you can download a duplicate SNGPL bill by consumer number. If supply has not returned by mid-morning on Sunday, register a complaint through SNGPL's official helpline or website.

The Peshawar Road underpass is one of several road projects under way in Rawalpindi. Karachi residents face a similar overnight SSGC shutdown this weekend in Baldia and nearby areas.
