Coventry 4-1 Newcastle: Lampard's side climb out of the Premier League drop zone to 14th
Four different scorers, a late Botman consolation and a jump of five places: Frank Lampard's promoted side had their best night of the season while Newcastle missed the chance to go fourth.

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday 12 October 2026, a result that lifts Frank Lampard's side from 19th to 14th and out of the Premier League relegation zone, Dawn reported. "Coventry vs Newcastle" was one of the most searched football matches in Pakistan overnight.
How the goals went in
| Minute | Team | Scorer |
|---|---|---|
| First half (penalty) | Coventry | Jack Rudoni |
| Just after half-time | Coventry | Sidiki Cherif |
| 70 | Newcastle | Sven Botman |
| 81 | Coventry | Ellis Simms |
| 86 | Coventry | Stephen Mfuni |
Coventry went ahead early from the spot after a foul in the sixth minute, and Sidiki Cherif doubled the lead about three minutes into the second half. Sven Botman pulled one back with a shot from about 20 yards on 70 minutes, but Newcastle never got level: Ellis Simms scored with a deflected drive on 81 minutes and Stephen Mfuni finished it from long range on 86.
What it means for both clubs
- Coventry: five places up in one night. The club won its first Premier League match in 25 years only in September, and this was the biggest win of its season so far.
- Newcastle: a win would have taken them into fourth. Instead it is their second defeat in six league games this season.
Lampard kept his feet on the ground afterwards. "Today we showed a lot of energy and showed our abilities. Some quality goals went in," he said, before adding: "If you think you have cracked it, you haven't."
