Europa League matchday 4 on Thursday night (played late on Thursday and early Friday morning Pakistan time) produced one of the shocks of the season: AC Milan 0, Ferencvaros 2 at San Siro. In the Netherlands, AZ Alkmaar 1, Juventus 2, a win Juve had to hold on for at the end, ANSA reported.

Milan 0-2 Ferencvaros

The Hungarian champions pressed Milan's defence through the first half and then struck twice in 14 minutes early in the second, both goals from forward Lenny Joseph, ESPN reported:

  • Goal 1: Joseph punished a mistake by Milan's back-up goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani.
  • Goal 2: Joseph finished a fast counter-attack while Milan pushed for an equaliser.
  • Red card: Ferencvaros substitute Bamidele Yusuf was sent off in the 77th minute, but Milan could not use the extra man.

Ferencvaros keep their perfect start to the league phase. Milan have three points from four games and sit 28th, which would mean elimination if the phase ended today: only the top 24 go through, with the top eight going straight to the last 16 and the teams from 9th to 24th playing off.

Amorim: 'No excuses'

Milan coach Ruben Amorim turned on his team and himself. "They were better technically, tactically, and especially mentally, they deserved to win," he said. "We were not prepared to play professional football today." He added that Milan were "not ready to compete on both fronts in Serie A and Europe".

AZ Alkmaar 1-2 Juventus

Teun Koopmeiners, who played for AZ before moving to Italy, and Randal Kolo Muani scored for Juventus, VAVEL reported. AZ scored once and ANSA described a nervy finish, but Juve held on for three points after being held 2-2 by Rennes on matchday 3 (our matchday 3 results).
