Verstappen takes sprint pole

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) took pole for the sprint with a lap of 1:31.156, 0.120 seconds ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, Formula 1 reported. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) was third, ahead of the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.

The stewards looked at Verstappen for passing Leclerc under yellow flags in the first part of the session, but issued no penalty, calling it an "unfortunate consequence" of the two cars' different speeds, so he keeps the pole. It comes after his first win of the 2026 season. Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes leads the drivers' championship and starts the sprint seventh.
