Punjab Green Credit: Rs 30,000 for compost, Rs 20,000 for cycling, and the catch

The Punjab government is offering green credits worth Rs 30,000 to households that turn kitchen waste into compost, the latest addition to the CM Punjab Green Credit Program. The announcement landed on World Cleanup Day and has been circulating hard since.

The scheme is genuine. It is run by the Punjab government, registration is at greencredit.punjab.gov.pk, and it now covers 41 districts. Before you start peeling vegetables with a spreadsheet open, here is how it actually works and what the numbers really say.

What each action is worth

Composting kitchen waste: three green credits, stated as equivalent to Rs 30,000. Fruit and vegetable peels, eggshells and other biodegradable material.

Cycling: cycle at least 75 km, recorded through the CM Punjab Green Credit Program Tracker app, and submit a photo of the bicycle plus the trip proof on an MRV form on the portal. Credits stated at Rs 20,000.

Plastic bottles: up to Rs 2,500 in credits per kilogramme of empty plastic bottles, capped at four kilogrammes. That is a Rs 10,000 ceiling. Collection runs through registered vendors, of which there are currently two in Lahore.

Other listed actions include using an electric bike or scooter, planting trees, rainwater conservation and reporting pollution violations.

The number nobody puts in the headline

1.44 million citizens have registered in 14 months. Total payments distributed: around Rs 36.5 million, of which roughly Rs 16.5 million came in the last three months.

Divide one by the other. That is about Rs 25 per registered person since the programme began. Not Rs 30,000, not Rs 20,000, not Rs 10,000.

That gap is not proof of a scam. It is what happens when a scheme pays on verification: you register in two minutes, then you have to actually cycle 75 km with the app running, or fill four kilogrammes of bottles and get them to one of two vendors in a city of 14 million, and then clear an MRV check. Most registrations never reach a payout because most people never complete a verified action.

Four kilogrammes of empty plastic bottles, for the record, is roughly 200 to 280 standard 1.5-litre bottles. That is a lot of collecting for a Rs 10,000 ceiling in credits.

How to register without getting scammed

Use greencredit.punjab.gov.pk and nothing else. This programme has attracted a swarm of copycat blogs with names built to look official, promising "Rs 100,000 relief" and asking for your CNIC on a form that is not a government form.

The rules are the same as for every Punjab scheme: the government does not charge a registration fee, does not ask for an advance, and does not collect your details on WhatsApp. If a page asks for money to process a green credit, it is not the programme.

Worth your time or not

If you already cycle, log it. The app run costs you nothing and 75 km is three weekends.

If you are considering buying a bicycle or an electric scooter for the credits, do the maths on the purchase first, not on the reward.
