Hurricane Trudy was a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (about 170 km/h) on Sunday 18 October 2026, about 135 miles (215 km) west-southwest of the Mexican port of Manzanillo and moving northwest at 10 mph, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said in its early update, AP reported via CBS News. Trudy had earlier strengthened into a major Category 3 hurricane before easing.

Where the warnings are

  • Hurricane warning: from Manzanillo in Colima state north to Cabo Corrientes in Jalisco.
  • Tropical storm warning: Las Islas Marias, the island group off the coast of Nayarit.
  • Lifted: the earlier warning for the coast from Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas was discontinued as the storm moved away.

The NHC said hurricane and tropical storm conditions could arrive in the warned areas through Sunday morning and afternoon. The centre was expected to stay near the coast through Sunday evening and then pass south of the Baja California peninsula; the forecast reported by AP did not include a landfall.

Rain is the bigger danger

The forecast is for 4 to 8 inches (100 to 200 mm) of rain through the weekend across coastal Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco, with isolated totals near 12 inches (300 mm). The NHC warned of "life-threatening flooding and mudslides", especially in steep terrain.

Colima's authorities said the overall risk was low but that heavy rain could still cause damage because the ground is already saturated. The Mexican Navy told sailors and people living on the coast to take extreme caution.

A busy month on Mexico's Pacific side

Trudy is the latest in a run of storms off western Mexico this month. Hurricane Simon peaked as a Category 4 storm and weakened off the coast near Puerto Vallarta last week, and storm Rachel left 10 people missing in Baja California (our report).

For Pakistanis travelling to Mexico

Anyone with plans on Mexico's Pacific coast should check the airline and the NHC's public advisories before travelling; Mexico's Pacific coast is 11 hours behind Pakistan, so an NHC update issued at 9am local time arrives at 8pm PKT.
