Pakistan Army ranks in order: insignia, commands and what the pay really is

Pakistan Army ranks run in three separate tiers: commissioned officers, junior commissioned officers (JCOs) and other ranks. They are not one ladder. A soldier who joins as a sepoy and a cadet who joins through the Pakistan Military Academy are on different tracks from day one, and that is the single thing most rank charts online get wrong.

Here is the full order, what each level commands, what the badges mean, and where the pay actually comes from.

JCOs are a South Asian institution with no British or American equivalent. A Subedar Major is the senior adviser to a battalion commander and often has thirty years of service. Rank charts that slot JCOs below a fresh Second Lieutenant are technically right about seniority and badly wrong about authority.

What the badges mean

The Pakistan Army inherited the British rank structure at Partition and made one substitution that explains almost every badge on a Pakistani shoulder: the British crown was replaced by the star and crescent, the symbol of the sovereignty of the Government of Pakistan.

Sourced descriptions for the general officers:

• General (four star): shoulder stars with crossed swords and a laurel device.
• Lieutenant General (three star): crossed swords and laurel device.
• Major General (two star): a crossed sword and baton with a star and crescent inside a diamond.

Junior and field officers wear stars, with the star and crescent added at field rank. For the exact pip counts, check the current badge images on the Pakistan Army's own rank pages rather than a coaching-academy blog, because these are the details the private sites most often get wrong.

What each rank actually commands

This is more useful than the badge for understanding who does what.

• General: four-star. Two posts hold it, the Chief of Army Staff and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.
• Lieutenant General: there are about 29 serving, each usually commanding a corps. Others hold GHQ appointments such as Chief of General Staff, Military Secretary, DG ISI, DG ISPR, DG Strategic Plans Division, Engineer in Chief and President of the National Defence University.
• Major General: commands a division, infantry, armoured or mechanised, or Force Command Northern Areas, or heads a GHQ directorate.
• Brigadier: commands a brigade.
• Lieutenant Colonel: commands a battalion or a regiment.
• Major: company second in command or a staff appointment.
• Captain and Lieutenant: platoon and company level.

Field Marshal is a five-star ceremonial rank and has been held only twice in Pakistan's history, so treat it as an honour rather than a step in a career.

How you get in

There are two doors, and they lead to different tiers.

1. Commissioned officer: the PMA Long Course is the main route. Apply through a Selection and Recruitment Centre, clear the initial tests, then the Inter Services Selection Board (ISSB) over four days, then a medical, then two years at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul. You are commissioned as a Second Lieutenant.
2. Soldier: enlist as a sepoy through an army recruitment centre, then promote through Lance Naik, Naik and Havildar on the basis of service, courses and vacancies. Selected Havildars are promoted into the JCO tier as Naib Subedar.
3. Technical and professional entries exist as well, including short service commissions and direct commissions for doctors, engineers and IT specialists, each with its own age and qualification bar.

Time in rank matters more than anything else in the first decade. The narrowing starts at Lieutenant Colonel, and by Brigadier the selection boards are the constraint, not the clock.

What the pay is

This is where most published rank charts stop being reliable, so be clear about what is and is not public.

Uniformed armed forces personnel are on separate armed forces pay scales, not the civil Basic Pay Scale. Their take-home is basic pay plus rank pay, qualification pay, command and staff pay, messing, ration, accommodation or hiring allowance, and in many cases hard area allowance. The Finance Division does not publish a rank-by-rank armed forces table in the way it publishes the civil one, and the salary figures on private "army salary" sites are estimates, not notified scales.

What is official is the Revision of Basic Pay Scales 2026 circular issued by the Ministry of Finance on 21 July 2026, effective 1 July 2026, which covers civil employees paid out of civil and defence estimates. It is the right benchmark for civilians working for the armed forces, and a rough gauge of grade equivalence for everyone else:

A commissioned officer enters at a level broadly equivalent to BPS 17. Basic pay alone is never the number that lands in the account, because allowances form the larger share.

Four mistakes to avoid

1. Treating JCOs as a rung between NCO and officer. They are a distinct commissioned tier with their own selection.
2. Using Indian Army charts. The rank names overlap almost entirely, the insignia do not: India kept a different crest, Pakistan uses the star and crescent.
3. Believing published salary tables. Unless the figure traces back to a Finance Division or GHQ notification, treat it as a guess.
4. Confusing cavalry titles with different ranks. A Risaldar is a Subedar in an armoured unit, not a senior one.
