Spotify pulls 50 million AI slop and spam tracks from recommendations in a year

Another 75 million spam tracks were removed outright. Spotify now labels AI-generated artists and keeps them out of recommendations, and says complaints have fallen.

Spotify says it has taken more than 50 million AI-generated "slop" and spam tracks out of its recommendations this year, on top of more than 75 million spam tracks it has removed from the service altogether for serious or repeated rule breaking. The company set out the figures on Tuesday in a newsroom post marking a year of its AI policy, and said it has reworked its recommendation system over the past six months to push more music by human artists.

What Spotify changed

Spotify says it studied the tracks listeners were skipping, ignoring or reporting, and found they were consistently ones it had marked as slop or spam. Since it changed its recommendations, it says, listener complaints about such content have dropped sharply. Its editors also no longer put tracks identified as slop or spam on playlists.

No single test catches AI spam, the company admits. It combines:

  • listener engagement and feedback;
  • upload patterns, such as mass uploads and duplicates;
  • metadata, including search-term stuffing and artificially short tracks;
  • results from several third-party AI detection tools.

The labels listeners will see

ToolWhat it does
AI Credits (since April)Artists disclose which roles and instruments used AI; shown in Song Credits on mobile
Verified by SpotifyMore than 300,000 artists verified, over 70% of them independent
AI Persona badgeMarks artists whose identity is AI-generated; they are left out of recommendations unless you follow them
Artist Profile ProtectionLets artists approve releases listed under their name; open to all artists by the end of the year

Spotify says it is the only major streaming service that labels AI-generated artist identities. It has stopped short of labelling every AI-made track, The Verge noted, while rivals have gone different ways: YouTube Music labels AI songs, Deezer lets users filter AI music out, and Bandcamp has banned it.

Separately on Tuesday, Spotify announced a licensing deal with the distributor Believe for fan-made covers and remixes, building on the AI remix tool it is developing with Universal Music Group.

What it means for Pakistani artists

Independent musicians in Pakistan who release on Spotify through distributors should note two things:

  1. Get verified. The Verified by Spotify badge now covers artists who make up more than 99% of what listeners search for, and it tells listeners a real person is behind the music.
  2. The 1,000-stream threshold matters more. A track earns royalties only after 1,000 streams in a year, a rule in place since 2024. Spotify says tracks that look AI-generated are 10 times more likely to fall short of it, which it calls a first line of defence for human artists.

Why it matters

Generative AI tools can now produce finished songs in seconds, and streaming services have been flooded with them, often uploaded at scale to collect small royalty payments. "AI moves fast, and bad actors adapt just as fast," Spotify said, adding that it will keep updating its systems as spammers change tactics.
