BAN vs WI 1st Test: Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and chose to bat against West Indies at Mirpur, Dhaka on Wednesday 28 October, in the first of two World Test Championship Tests. Play began at 9am Pakistan time (4am GMT), and Bangladesh were 52 for 1 after 18 overs in the first session, according to the ESPNcricinfo live score.

"Bangladesh vs West Indies" was among the most searched phrases in Pakistan on Wednesday morning, with Google Trends showing more than 20,000 searches.

Mushfiqur out, Hridoy in

The big news at the toss was the absence of Mushfiqur Rahim. The 106-Test veteran hurt his hand in the nets on Tuesday, ESPNcricinfo's Mohammad Isam reported, and the injury has been described as a contusion; he is expected to be fit for the second Test. The last time Mushfiqur missed a Test was also against West Indies, in the Caribbean in late 2024.

Bangladesh made two changes: Towhid Hridoy and fast bowler Shoriful Islam come in for Mushfiqur and Ebadot Hossain. The home side go in with three spinners (Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan) and two quicks (Hasan Mahmud and Shoriful).

Bishop's debut, no Roach

West Indies have handed a Test debut to Joshua Bishop, a 26-year-old left-arm spinner, and left out veteran seamer Kemar Roach. Bishop joins Jomel Warrican and captain Roston Chase as the spin options, with Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph the fast bowlers and Justin Greaves the allrounder. Amir Jangoo keeps wicket because Shai Hope, who played West Indies' last Test in August, is skipping the tour.

Timing in Pakistan and where to watch

Each day's play starts at 9am PKT, which means the first session runs through the Pakistani morning and stumps fall in the mid-afternoon. In Pakistan, the streaming app Tapmad is promoting a live stream of the 1st Test; our guide to Tamasha live cricket explains how the other local apps work if you want to check their listings too.

Why it matters for Pakistan fans

Both sides are rivals of Pakistan in the World Test Championship table, so every result here moves the race Pakistan is in. Pakistan's own focus this week is the ODI tri-series in Lahore, where Sri Lanka bowled them out for 110 on Tuesday to reach the final, and Sri Lanka's Test tour of Pakistan that follows.

We will update this story with the day's result. Today's fixtures and live scores for the matches Pakistani fans follow are on our cricket page.
