Bangladesh vs Afghanistan: the selection calls
Bangladesh left out fast bowler Shoriful Islam, who took a career-best 7 for 49 against Australia in Mackay in August, and brought in Ebadot Hossain. They also picked off-spinner Nayeem Hasan, who was not in the original Test squad but travelled with the team for last week's practice game against the UAE, ESPNcricinfo reported. Taskin Ahmed was already rested for this Test.
Afghanistan, under new Test captain Rahmat Shah, went for a batting-heavy XI, with Shahidullah at No. 7 and allrounders Ismat Alam and Yamin Ahmadzai sharing the new ball. Former captain Hashmatullah Shahidi plays in the middle order, and the spin comes from left-armer Zia-ur-Rehman Akbar and leg-spinner Qais Ahmed. By the 22nd over, Zia-ur-Rehman had gone for 21 runs in three overs, including a straight six from Tanzid.
Bangladesh XI: Tanzid Hasan, Shadman Islam, Mominul Haque, Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), Mushfiqur Rahim, Litton Das (wk), Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Hasan Mahmud, Ebadot Hossain.
Afghanistan XI: Sediqullah Atal, Abdul Malik, Rahmat Shah (capt), Hashmatullah Shahidi, Ikram Alikhil, Zia-ur-Rehman Akbar, Shahidullah, Yamin Ahmadzai, Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmed, Mohammad Saleem.
Is it part of the World Test Championship?
No. This is a one-off Test outside the 2025-27 World Test Championship, so no points are at stake. For Afghanistan it is a rare Test outing; for Bangladesh it follows their series in Australia in August.
