Ind vs WI 3rd T20I is on Sunday 11 October at 6:30pm Pakistan time (7pm in India) in Indore, with the five-match series level at 1-1. It follows the Ranchi game on Friday, when West Indies chased 250 with Shai Hope's 102 not out and Sherfane Rutherford's 84, the highest successful T20I chase against India. That match had 501 runs in 38.3 overs, 352 of them in boundaries.

Pakistan play Sri Lanka in Rawalpindi at 6pm on the same evening, so the two games overlap: our Pak vs SL 2nd T20I preview has that one.

Why Indore worries both sets of bowlers

Indore has small boundaries and usually a true pitch, and it has not hosted T20 cricket for two years. Its last three ODIs produced totals of 399, 385 and 337, and India made 260 in a T20I there against Sri Lanka in 2017, ESPNcricinfo noted in its preview. One trend runs the other way: all five games on this tour (three ODIs, two T20Is) have been won by the side batting second, while Indore has tended to reward the side that bats first and piles up runs, with only two successful chases in eight ODIs there.

Sunday's forecast in Indore is a high of 34C and a low of 17C, which points to dew later in the evening, the factor India blamed for Ranchi.

Likely XIs

India: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer (capt), Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Nitish Kumar Reddy or Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mayank Yadav, Arshdeep Singh. ESPNcricinfo expects India to keep playing only three specialist bowlers and to consider Nitish Kumar Reddy for Dube.

West Indies: Shai Hope (capt, wk), Kamil Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Roston Chase, Shamar Springer, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie. They are likely to stay unchanged after the win.

The match-up to watch

Kuldeep Yadav was India's only bowler to take a wicket outside the powerplay in Ranchi, but his four overs cost 53 and Rutherford hit him for two sixes in 10 balls before Kuldeep got him out. If Hetmyer falls early again, that spin-against-power contest in the middle overs is likely to decide the game.

Numbers to know

  • The 501 runs in Ranchi are the second-highest aggregate in a T20I, behind South Africa vs West Indies in Centurion.
  • West Indies have won three T20Is in India, all while chasing.
  • Leaving out Roston Chase's four overs for 24, India scored at 14.06 an over in Ranchi.
