Maaz Sadaqat 114 in vain: Moqim 4-14 hands Falcons a maiden CPL title

Antigua and Barbuda Falcons won their first Caribbean Premier League title in the early hours of Monday, Pakistan time, beating tournament debutants Jamaica Kingsmen by eight wickets at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown. The match started at 4am PKT and was over with 20 balls to spare.

Every decisive moment in it belonged to a Pakistani.

Sadaqat's 114 carried an innings nobody else joined

Maaz Sadaqat hit 114 off 58 balls with nine sixes and eight fours. Jamaica Kingsmen finished on 170 for 9. That is more than half the team total from one batter, and the rest of the card is brutal reading: Saim Ayub's 29 was the only other double-figure score, and three of the top six were out for ducks.

Sadaqat and Ayub had the final in hand at one stage. From 30 for 2 they added 80 for the third wicket and took the score to 110 for 2, scoring at roughly ten an over.

Moqim's 12th over broke it open

Sufyan Moqim struck twice in the 12th over, having Ayub caught trying to slog to the on side and then bowling out Rovman Powell for a duck, caught at backward point. Kingsmen fell from 110 for 2 to 113 for 6 inside three overs.

Moqim finished with 4 for 14 and was named Player of the Match. Shamar Joseph took 2 for 27. Sadaqat kept swinging until he was dismissed off the second-last ball of the innings, but 170 was well under par on that surface.

Cornwall's 20-run first over, then Nawaz finished it

Rahkeem Cornwall took two fours and two sixes off Saim Ayub in a 20-run opening over before being bowled by the last ball of it. Evin Lewis made 38 and added 64 with Amir Jangoo.

Jangoo and Hasan Nawaz then put on an unbroken 89, with seven fours and six sixes between them. Jangoo finished 57 not out, Nawaz 47 not out, and Nawaz closed the game with two sixes in the 17th over. Falcons 173 for 2 in 16.4 overs. Vitel Lawes was the only Kingsmen bowler to take a wicket, 1 for 32.

Shadab Khan's tournament

Shadab Khan was named MVP of the tournament for 132 runs and 11 wickets, including a hat-trick and figures of 4 for 16 in Qualifier 1. He told reporters after the final that the batting role he was given left him "mentally free", and that he had needed the bowling return after a difficult couple of years.

It is the Falcons' first title in their third season. For Pakistani viewers it was a rare night when the leading scorer, the leading wicket-taker, the Player of the Match and the MVP were all Pakistani, and two of them were on the losing side.
