Pakistan's women lost the Asian Games semi-final to Sri Lanka on Sunday morning, so the tournament now comes down to one match on Tuesday: PAK W vs BAN W, the bronze medal play-off, at 5:00am Pakistan time.

Why this one stings

Bangladesh are exactly the side that pushed Pakistan off the podium last time. At Hangzhou in 2023, Pakistan lost the bronze medal match to Bangladesh and went home fourth. Tuesday is a rematch for the same medal.

Bangladesh arrive after a heavy semi-final loss of their own. India made 195 for 4, Shafali Verma hitting an unbeaten hundred off 49 balls, and then bowled Bangladesh out for 81 in 15.4 overs to win by 114 runs.

How Pakistan got here

Pakistan scraped past Thailand in the quarter-final, chasing 92 in a rain-shortened 11-over match and getting there with 2 balls and 3 wickets to spare.

The semi-final was a better performance with a worse result. Pakistan posted 177 for 4, their highest total of the tournament, built on Ayesha Zafar's 71 and Shawaal Zulfiqar's 54. Sri Lanka chased it down with 13 balls left because Chamari Athapaththu made 83 not out, with Hasini Perera adding 42.

Shawaal Zulfiqar is Pakistan's top run scorer at these Games, with 79 from two innings.

What a medal would be worth

Pakistan won the women's cricket gold at the first two Asian Games it was played at, Guangzhou 2010 and Incheon 2014, beating Bangladesh in both finals. No other country has won it twice. Since then the record reads fourth in 2023, and a loss on Tuesday would make it two Games in a row without a medal.
