Diesel down Rs 3.12 to Rs 418.96: what it does to freight, atta and your generator

High speed diesel is Rs 418.96 a litre from Wednesday, 23 September, down Rs 3.12 from Rs 422.08. OGRA notified the new ex-depot price under the federal pricing mechanism. Petrol fell in the same notification, but by less: Rs 1.70, to Rs 392.05.

Diesel is the fuel that sets prices you do not pay at a pump. It moves the truck that brings wheat to the mill, the bus on the Lahore to Multan route, the tractor at harvest and the generator behind half the shops in a commercial market.

The arithmetic, by vehicle

• A 200-litre truck fill: Rs 83,792, down Rs 624
• A 50-litre Hilux or Bolan diesel tank: Rs 20,948, down Rs 156
• A 60-litre tractor tank: Rs 25,138, down Rs 187
• A 15 kVA shop generator burning about 4 litres an hour: Rs 1,676 for a four-hour evening, down Rs 47

A Karachi to Lahore run of roughly 1,200 km in a loaded prime mover at about 3 km per litre burns 400 litres. That trip's fuel bill drops about Rs 1,248, on a total of roughly Rs 167,584.

Why the atta rate will not move tomorrow

Freight rates in Pakistan are set by negotiation between the goods transport associations and their customers, not by a notification, and they are slow in both directions. A Rs 3.12 cut is roughly 0.7 percent of the diesel price and perhaps 0.3 percent of a hauler's total cost once wages, tyres, tolls and the vehicle payment are counted. That is not enough to reopen a rate. What it does is take the pressure off the next round of increases.

The number to watch instead is the run of cuts. Diesel has come down from Rs 422.08 and the direction over the past fortnight matters more to a transporter's costing than any single notification. The full record is on our diesel price page.

If you run a diesel vehicle

Recost now, not at month end. Take the new Rs 418.96 into your per-kilometre rate, because the saving on a single 200-litre fill is real money and it is easy to leave it sitting in the old spreadsheet. One caution at the pump: the notified price is ex-depot and excludes inland freight from the shipping point to the retail outlet, so the board in Quetta or Gilgit reads higher than the board in Karachi. The gap is the freight, not a stealth increase.
