SPI inflation this week: up 0.21% to 11.53% on a year, chicken up 7.25% in a week
Weekly prices of essentials rose 0.21% in the week to 1 October, the Bureau of Statistics says, led by chicken. What rose, what fell and what it means for your budget, updated every week.
Updated Saturday 3 October 2026. SPI weekly inflation in Pakistan rose 0.21% in the week ended Thursday 1 October 2026, and the year-on-year rate eased to 11.53% from 11.92% a week earlier, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics figures reported by Business Recorder. The combined index moved from 369.69 to 370.40 points. The big story this week is chicken, up 7.25% in seven days.

Of the 51 items in the basket, 20 rose, 10 fell and 21 did not move.

What got cheaper this week
Diesel fell 3.43%, bananas 1.52%, sugar 1.05%, potatoes 0.96% and petrol 0.65% over the week. Note that pump prices have moved again since the survey: petrol went up Rs 2.10 a litre and diesel 30 paise from 3 October, OGRA notified. Check today's figure on our petrol price page.
Against a year ago
- Onions: up 114.20%
- LPG: up 66.59%
- Electricity for the lowest slab (Q1): up 58.59%
- Diesel: up 44.50% and petrol: up 44.05%
- Wheat flour: up 32.65%
- Mutton up 15.07%, chicken 13.60%, beef 12.90%
- Tomatoes: down 45.52%, potatoes down 39.54%, sugar down 21.95%, eggs down 17.47%
The rise was even across incomes: households spending up to Rs 17,732 a month saw 0.19%, and those above Rs 44,175 saw 0.21%. The monthly consumer price index, a broader measure, was 10.3% in September, down from 11.1% in August (CPI page).
What it means for you
- Chicken is the item to watch: a 7% weekly jump usually shows up at the shop within days. Buy in bulk only if you can freeze it.

Week ended 24 September 2026: SPI up 0.99%, 11.92% on a year
Weekly inflation in Pakistan jumped 0.99% in one week and now stands at 11.92% year on year, according to the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ending 24 September 2026, released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. A near-1% weekly move is large for the SPI, and most of it came from one line: electricity.
What went up this week
The SPI tracks 51 essential items in 50 markets across 17 cities. This week 20 items rose, 10 fell and 21 were unchanged.

The electricity reading covers the lowest domestic consumption band, the one that most low-income households fall into, so the jump shows up directly in their monthly bill.
What got cheaper
Tomatoes fell 13.45%, potatoes 8.33%, bananas 5.66% and onions 2.42%. Diesel fell 1.57% and petrol 0.34% over the week, while sugar slipped 0.23% and powdered salt 0.90%.
The year-on-year picture
Measured against the same week last year, the biggest moves are:
- Onions: up 115.98%, more than double a year ago
- LPG: up 63.97%
- Potatoes: down 39.21%
- Sugar: down 21.14%

What it means for you
