The Diplomat season 5 confirmed by Netflix weeks after season 4's cliffhanger

Netflix has renewed The Diplomat for season 5, the streamer announced on Thursday, only weeks after season 4 arrived earlier this month, Variety reported.

There is no release date and no plot detail yet. Season 4 ended on a large cliffhanger, so the renewal answers the main question fans in Pakistan and everywhere else had: the story will continue.

The cast

• Keri Russell as Ambassador Kate Wyler
• Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler
• Allison Janney as President Grace Penn
• Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn
• With Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn and Nana Mensah

Janney and Whitford, as the Penns, are a reunion from "The West Wing".

Where season 4 left things

Netflix's description of season 4: one catastrophic moment shatters the peace Kate brokered between the US and the UK, while President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler pursue a conspiracy to steal Russia's most powerful weapon that pushes the United States towards war. Kate and Todd, an uneasy pair, team up to stop them.

The numbers behind the renewal

The show has also collected awards: for season 3, Russell won the SAG Actor award for best female actor in a drama series, Janney won an Emmy for supporting actress in a drama, and the series had seven Emmy nominations including outstanding drama. Season 4 was itself renewed before season 3 premiered.

The series was created by Debora Cahn, who executive produces with Russell, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah and Eli Attie.
